MOUNT AIRY - Catalina Tempering, a windows manufacturer, said yesterday that it has opened a plant in Mount Airy, creating 20 jobs.
The company has bought a 67,000-square-foot building on Derby Street once used by Kentucky Derby Hosiery.
Ed Rosengrant, a vice president for Catalina, said that the company chose Mount Airy because of its central location on the East Coast and the "abundance of qualified labor in the area."
Catalina is part of Glasswerks, based in South Gate, Calif. Glasswerks has seven tempering and fabricating plants in the United States.
The company is eligible for up to $154,220 in incentives over five years from Surry County and Mount Airy if it meets and maintains employment and investment benchmarks, said Todd Taylor, the president of the Surry County Economic Development Partnership.
