BB&T Insurance acquires Florida insurance company

RALEIGH - BB&T Insurance Services said yesterday that it has bought the insurance agency of Oswald Trippe and Co. Inc. of Fort Myers, Fla.
BB&T Insurance is the seventh-largest insurance broker in the country. The purchase price was not disclosed.
The company said that BB&T's purchase of Colonial BankGroup Inc. in August -- which expanded BB&T's presence in southwestern Florida -- played a role in the deal.
Oswald Trippe was founded in 1982 and has about 130 employees in Florida, where it has offices in Cape Coral, Miami, Naples, Sarasota, Holmes Beach, Weston and Ocala. It also operates four offices in North Carolina that were not part of the transaction.
BB&T Insurance operates more than 100 insurance agencies in North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina, Maryland, West Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky and California.
