College-Football Notebook: Skinner remains questionable for Georgia Tech

Published: November 3, 2009

■ Quarterback Riley Skinner of Wake Forest is showing no symptoms of the concussion he suffered in Saturday's 28-27 loss to Miami, but he will not practice until Wednesday -- at the earliest.

Skinner, a four-year starter who holds many of the passing records at Wake Forest, was knocked out of the game with 6:22 remaining. A CT scan later revealed that he had a mild concussion.

Coach Jim Grobe said after the game that Skinner will not return until he's cleared by the Wake Forest medical staff.

Don Steelman, the head football trainer, said that Skinner did not practice yesterday and that he will not dress in pads today but that he might throw some passes on the side.

Even if Skinner does return in pads for Wednesday's practice, he will not participate in contact drills this week. He remains questionable for Saturday's game at No. 10 Georgia Tech.

■ Game times and TV coverage plans for four ACC games scheduled Nov. 14 were put on a six-day option, the ACC announced yesterday. ABC/ESPN and Raycom can use the six-day notice, rather than the normal 12-day notice, a select number of times a season.

The Virginia Tech-Maryland game Nov. 14 will start at 1 p.m. and the Boston College-Virginia game will start at 3:30.

The games on the six-day option are: Florida State at Wake Forest; Clemson at N.C. State; Georgia Tech at Duke; and Miami at North Carolina.

Also, Wake Forest's game at Georgia Tech on Saturday will start at 3:30, with TV coverage on ABC/ESPN2.

Dan Beebe, the Big 12 commissioner, wants the NCAA to treat teams with 6-6 records the same as it treats teams with winning records when it comes to bowl games.

Under current rules, teams with .500 records can receive bowl bids only if a school's conference already has a deal with a bowl and all other teams with winning records have been invited to games. Beebe's proposal would eliminate those exceptions and permit 6-6 teams to be accepted immediately.

The proposal is expected to be discussed during the NCAA convention in January.

■ Coach Chip Kelly of Oregon said yesterday that there's nothing to report about the possible reinstatement of suspended running back LeGarrette Blount.

Blount was suspended for punching defensive end Byron Hout of Boise State in the aftermath of Oregon's season-opening loss. Kelly suspended Blount for the season the next day but allowed him to continue practicing and later announced that Blount could be reinstated if he met certain conditions.

■ Quarterback Tony Pike will practice with No. 4 Cincinnati this week, but his status is still uncertain because of an injury to his non-throwing arm. Coach Brian Kelly said yesterday that Pike will participate in more practice drills and that he'll then decide if Pike has a chance to play Saturday against Connecticut.

Pike broke his left forearm last season, had a plate and six screws inserted, and returned after missing two games. With a cast on the arm, he led Cincinnati to its first Big East title. The plate was damaged in a win over South Florida on Oct. 15, and Pike had to have it replaced. Since then, Pike has been limited to individual work in practice, and sophomore Zach Collaros has taken over as the starter.

Mike Williams, one of the top receivers in the country, has quit the team at Syracuse, Coach Doug Marrone said yesterday.

Williams did not play last season because of academic problems and was suspended for Syracuse's game against Akron nine days ago for violating team policy. He ranks sixth in the nation with 106.6 receiving yards a game and is tied for 14th in the country with an average of seven catches a game.

■ Coach Mark Richt has announced that Joe Cox will continue as Georgia's starting quarterback.

Richt released a statement yesterday saying staff members unanimously decided that Cox gives the team its best chance to win. Still, he said that sophomore Logan Gray will get some playing time at quarterback this week against Tennessee Tech.

There were questions about Cox' position after he was booted from a 41-17 loss to top-ranked Florida on Saturday after throwing three interceptions. Gray also struggled, throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown.
