Wine: Laurel Gray Vineyards 2008 Rose 1773.

Review: Most roses tend to take red-wine grapes and just lightly press them to get pink wine. Laurel Gray's Rose 1773 takes wine made from two white grapes, viognier and chardonnay, and one red one, syrah, and mixes them together. The result is an unusual fruity aroma that's hard to pinpoint. The taste, though, is of strawberries, with a little spiciness from the syrah. Despite some sweetness, the finish is fairly dry. Laurel

Gray is near Hamptonville, in the Swan Creek area. The wine's name refers to the year that the winery owners' family came to the area from England. Some might call this Laurel Gray's answer to white zinfandel, but it's a nice patio wine. Serve as an aperitif on a warm day, or with spicy food. Available at the winery.
