■ Music Stroll: The Third Thursday Music Stroll in downtown Thomasville will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a free concert by local artist Shane Key and 44 Love of Winston-Salem in the clock-tower parking lot.
■ Kiwanis meeting: The Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club will meet from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. Fifth St. Eric Aft of United Way of Forsyth County will discuss key initiatives.
■ Poppy Day: American Legion Auxiliary Post 55 will distribute paper poppies in honor of veterans from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at all K&W cafeterias and the Harris Teeter on Cloverdale Avenue. Proceeds will be used to help needy veterans.
■ Spring Festival: "Busy Bees" will be the theme for Old Salem's Spring Festival from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the historic district. There will be presentations from local beekeepers, and demonstrations on beeswax candle-making, medicinal uses for honey, the role of bees in pollination, and more. A puppet show, "The Beekeeper and the Bees" will be at 1 and 3 p.m. in the Horton Center. Festival activities are included with an All-in-One 2-day ticket to Old Salem, which costs $21 for adults and $10 for children 6 to 16.
■ Benefit poker run: Davie County motorcyclists will have a "poker run" to raise money to help Lonnie Barnes, former pitcher and highly regarded pool-shooter, with medical expenses. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at Moxies on North Main Street in Mocksville. The cost is $25 for one hand, which includes lunch at Tucker's Place in Advance, plus $10 for a second hand if desired.
■ Living history: Nora Brooks will portray scenes from the life of Mildred Childe Lee, the youngest daughter of Robert E. Lee, during the Rockford Preservation Society's Memorial Day service. It will begin at 3 p.m. at the Rockford Methodist Church in Rockford. Afterward, the group will place flags at Rockford Cemetery. Donations will be accepted. For information, call 374-3825.
■ Veterans appreciation day: The Winston-Salem Dash will honor veterans and active-duty military personnel at its game at Wake Forest Baseball Field (formerly Ernie Shore Field). They will get free admission to the game, and a Dash baseball cap as a souvenir. They are encouraged to wear headgear denoting their branch of service. Military ceremonies will begin at 1:30 p.m., and the game at 2.
■ VFW honor guard: Volunteers are needed to provide military honors at the funerals of veterans. Duties include firing rifle volleys, playing "Taps," and folding and presenting the flag. Members also present the Colors at civic and sports events. Uniforms, transportation and meals provided. For information, call Gray Templeton at 655-2118 or 766-6557.
