Fire/Police Briefs: Fire started by coffee maker injures 1

A fire injured a man and damaged an apartment Monday in southern Winston-Salem, authorities said yesterday.

A man was treated by Forsyth County paramedics for smoke inhalation and was taken to Forsyth Medical Center, the Winston-Salem Fire Department said. The fire damaged a second-floor apartment at 3514 Konnoak Drive.

The fire was started shortly before 7:30 p.m. by a coffee maker, the fire department said. It took firefighters 17 minutes to put out the fire.

The fire caused $40,000 in damage to the apartment building, the fire department said. The American Red Cross assisted the two adults who lived in the apartment.

Couple's house damaged by fire in Surry County

DOBSON -- A fire damaged a house in southern Surry County Monday, authorities said yesterday. A woman who lived in the house was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

The fire started from an electrical cord about 11:15 a.m. at 679 Jenkinstown Road, six miles south of Dobson, said Jason Burkholder, Surry's fire inspector. It took about 20 firefighters nearly 20 minutes to put out the fire.

John and Wanda Trivette lived in the house, Burkholder said. Wanda Trivette was treated at the scene by Surry County paramedics.

Burkholder said that there was no cost estimate available for the damage. The American Red Cross assisted the couple.

‘Journal' vendor in hospital after being hit by truck

A Winston-Salem man was seriously injured Monday when he was hit by a pickup on Stratford Road, authorities said yesterday.

Anthony Rouse, who sells papers from street medians for the Winston-Salem Journal was in serious condition yesterday afternoon at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Rouse, 51, was hit shortly after 12:30 p.m. when the pickup was turning left from First Street onto Stratford Road, said Lt. Brad Yandell of Winston-Salem Police Department. Phillip Mock of Lewisville was driving the pickup.

No charges were filed.

Woman, 47, is accused of arson in house fire

A Winston-Salem woman was charged yesterday with first-degree arson in connection with a fire that damaged an occupied house in eastern Winston-Salem last month, court records show.

Kathy Knouse Carter, 47, of 2315 Marble St. was accused of setting a fire to a house at 507 Dunleith Ave., an arrest warrant says. Another woman was inside the house when the fire started.

The fire began shortly after 12:30 a.m. on April 19 at the one-story frame house, the Winston-Salem Fire Department said.

The fire caused $35,000 in damage.

Carter was being held last night in the Forsyth County Jail with bond set at $150,000. She is scheduled to appear in court June 5.
