ASHEBORO, N.C. - One man has been found dead inside a car after a shootout between a North Carolina sheriff's deputy and two robbery suspects.
The Randolph County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Wednesday that 34-year-old Deputy Chad Oates chased two men believed to have robbed a store near Randleman.
Officials said the suspects stopped their car and opened fire on Oates, who returned fire and called in the car's license plate.
Deputies traced the plate number to a residence where 51-year-old Maxwell Jackson Ellison of Asheboro was found dead inside the car. Authorities are still looking for the second suspect.
The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting. A phone message left for a sheriff's spokesman wasn't immediately returned Wednesday evening.
