HAMPTONVILLE

A Yadkin County man accidentally shot his live-in girlfriend and then took his own life, Yadkin County Sheriff Mike Cain said Thursday.

The couple had been dead about two days when a deputy found their bodies Thursday afternoon in the home at 5104 Windsor Road, in the Windsor's Crossroads community.

A scribbled suicide note said "she was an accident," Cain said. The man's body was found near the front door. The woman's body was found in the "far end of the house," Cain said. Both had been shot with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Cain did not release the victims' names because family members were still being notified, he said. No one else was involved in the shooting, he said.

The couple had been dating about a month, Cain said, and the woman had moved into the house about a week ago. The man, who was in his mid-50s, was a long-time resident of Yadkin County. The woman was from Iredell County.

A friend of the man first came to check on him on Wednesday and found a note on the front door that said: "Be back tomorrow." He returned Thursday, and when he still got no answer he called 911 from a nearby store.

Owen Strickland, a neighbor, said that he talked to the man a few times, but did not know his name. It is not clear how long the man had lived in the white, one-story rental house.

Cain said that the bodies were taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for autopsies.
