CREED IS GOOD:

In the 1960s, Creed Bratton was part of the folk rock group The Grass Roots. Now, he’s best known for playing an exaggerated, comical version of himself on NBC’s hit series The Office. Starting today, he gets his own Web miniseries at www.NBC.com. The storyline follows Creed as he blackmails people so he can get the money to buy his own helicopter. New installments will run online each Thursday evening for four weeks. Other cast members from the show include Ed Helms, Oscar Nunez and Angela Kinsey.

BURNING THE CANDLE AT BOTH ENDS:

Roman Candle
has been compared to other alt-country-rock luminaries such as Wilco and Whiskeytown, but that’s too easy. It isn’t just that singer Skip Matheny waxes poetic about jukeboxes and roadside bars — he belts it, beautifully, with twang and heart, and a dash of bookish intellect. Roman Candle’s third full-length album, Oh Tall Tree in the Ear, comes out May 12. Its name comes from German poet Rainer Maria Rilke’s “Sonnets to Orpheus.” The band started playing in Chapel Hill in 1997; Skip and his band mate and brother, Logan, are from Wilkesboro. See them Friday at the Garage, 110 W. Seventh St. at 9 p.m. with The Deep Vibration. Tickets are $10. Get a little listen on Roman Candle’s MySpace page, www.myspace.com/romancandle.

OUT FOR BLOOD:

The 1979 cult classic Wise Blood finally comes to DVD Tuesday as part of the Criterion Collection, a video label devoted to culturally significant films. The film, a dark, satiric comedy, is based on the novel by Southern writer Flannery O’Connor. It tells the story of a bombastic Army veteran (Brad Dourif, pictured with co-star Ned Beatty) who becomes an evangelist despite his lack of faith. Harry Dean Stanton and John Huston (who also directed the film) also star. The DVD includes new interviews, an archival recording by O’Connor, and a companion booklet.
