BOONE -- Economic activity in Western North Carolina dropped by 1.2 percentage points in January, according to an index released yesterday. The index of 25 counties includes Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga and Wilkes.
The index fell to 112.3 and has declined for two consecutive months by at least 0.7 percentage points. The region also has lost more than 36,000 jobs since July.
