IN OTHER AREAS

□ Have A Heart 2009 debuted recently at The Children's Home. This 5K run and dog walk was a benefit for the Forsyth Humane Society and Crisis Control Ministry. The run consisted of a 5K loop around the barnyard and campus of The Children's Home.

After the run, 145 dogs and their owners followed a similar route around the campus.

The winners of the 5K run were Nate Ayers and Molly Nunn; masters winners were Bill Gibbs and Laurie Smith; and high-school winners were Brian Allgood and Abigail Tatter. Organizers of the fundraiser were Heidi Mitchell and Suzanne Ramm.

Participants donated food for the people and animals in the Winston-Salem community in addition to gathering pledges for the dog walk.

Sponsors, runners and walkers collected more than $13,000 for the local charities.

□ The Piedmont Kiwanis Club of Winston-Salem has donated $1,000 to sponsor a horse named Angel at the Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center in Tobaccoville. The gift was presented by the Kiwanis Club president, Alan Kirby, to the center's director, Susan Hubbard. The center provides professional equine-assisted activities for children and adults with special needs.

□ The Lewisville Historical Society had received a $25,000 grant from the Raymond B. Hooker Jr. Fund of the Winston-Salem Foundation to help finance the relocation of the historic Nissen House in Lewisville. The house was moved to its new location in January, and the grant will be used to make the first payment on the loan used for its relocation.

□ The N.C. Zoological Society recently elected officers to its board of directors. Among those re-elected to three-year board terms included Albert L. Butler III of Winston-Salem; Lynne Yates Graham of Advance; and Molly Millis-Hedgecock of High Point.

The Zoological Society is the private, nonprofit organization that supports the North Carolina Zoo and its conservation and education initiatives.

□ Sarah Starling, senior histotechnician at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, was awarded the Leonard Noble Educational Scholarship at the recent awards banquet at the National Society for Histotechnology Convention in Pittsburgh. A veteran in the field of histotechnology for 25 years, Starling came to Baptist Hospital in 1986 and became senior histotechnician in 1999.

The scholarship consists of a $1,000 grant that will enable Starling to learn more histological techniques or take a college course at an accredited school to enhance education in histotechnology. She plans to use the grant to further her education by taking workshops, learning new techniques and then training other histotechnicians to help advance patient care.

IN EDUCATION

□ Emily Sue Couch has been named to the 2008 fall-semester dean's list at Pfeiffer University. She is majoring in Christian education and youth ministry and is the daughter of Tommy and Sue Holt Couch of Winston-Salem.

□ Michael Hoover of Winston-Salem has been named to the dean's list for the 2008 fall quarter at DePaul University.

□ Robert J. Crawford II has been named to the fall 2008 dean's list at Northwestern University. He is a student in Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

Crawford is the son of David and Deborah Crawford of Winston-Salem.

□ Marion Troutman has been named to the 2008 fall-semester dean's list at Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Talmage Troutman of High Point.

□ Catherine Nielson has been named to the fall 2008 dean's list at Grove City College in Pennsylvania.

She is majoring in communications studies.

Nelson is a 2005 graduate of Wesleyan Christian Academy and the daughter of Donald and Patricia Nielson of Winston-Salem.

□ Daniel Rawls Lewis has been named to the dean's list for the 2008 fall-semester at Elon University. He is a junior majoring in public administration.

Lewis is the son of Cliff and Leslie Lewis of Lewisville.

IN THE ARTS

□ The Winston-Salem Symphony has announced the winners of its 2009 Peter Perret Youth Talent Search Competition.

The winner of the junior category, for students ages 8 to 12, is pianist Ryan Jung. Ryan lives in Winston-Salem and is a fifth-grade student at Meadowlark Elementary School. He has studied piano for three years and is a student of Eric

Larson at the UNC School of the Arts. Ryan won the Junior Category with his performance of the third movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto, no. 14 in E-flat Major.

The winner of the senior category, for students from age 13 through the senior year of high school, is violinist Kevin Zheng. Kevin, who is from Cary, attends UNCSA, where he is a student of Kevin Lawrence. A high-school freshman, he began studying violin seven years ago. Kevin performed the first movement from Symphonie Espangnole, op.21 in D minor, by Eduard Lalo in the competition.

The second- and third-place winners in the junior category are violinist

Chesney Ward, 10, of Greensboro, and violinist Celina Lin, 9, of Wilmington. The second- and third-place winners In the senior category are pianist Andrew Zhou, 13, of Cary and pianist Ethan Chu, 13, of Chapel Hill.

The Peter Perret Youth Talent Search competition was developed to identify North Carolina's most gifted and talented young musicians. Perret, the Winston-Salem Symphony's conductor emeritus, established the competition as a means of helping develop young talent and as a way of recognizing and supporting the teachers and families of musically gifted children.

Students auditioned before a panel of three judges, performing a movement from the standard concerto repertoire from memory. The judges were Perret, symphony music director Robert Moody, and the symphony's assistant conductor, Matthew Troy.

IN CIVIC AFFAIRS

□ The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina has recently honored 13 adult and 12 youth leaders at the YMCA's annual celebration. The following adults were presented with Strong Awards in response to their exceptional volunteerism and consideration towards others:

IN THE MILITARY

□ Air Force Airman Robert P. McCampbell has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. In addition to completing his basic training he earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

McCampbell is the son of Tad McCampbell of Dunwoody, Ga., and his mother and stepfather, Allison and Bobby Brown, live in Mocksville. He is a 2007 graduate of Davie High School.

□ Air Force Airman Cedrick G. Royster has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. In addition to completing his basic training, he earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Royster is the son of Glenn Royster of Kernersville, and a 2007 graduate of East Forsyth High School.
