Well, we got quite a snowy surprise this week after those balmy temperatures the previous week. I was glad to see the white stuff. It's hard to believe it's been since 2004 since our last significant snowfall. I think that's why many of you were just jumping for joy to be out in it.

Downtown Arts District Gallery Hop - Friday, March 6, 2009
On Friday, March 6, 2009 the shops studios and galleries in the Downtown Arts District will open their doors with new artwork and exhibits for First Friday Gallery Hop. The event is free and open to the public featuring extended shop hours from 7p.m. until 10 p.m.
The Gallery Hops attract hundreds of people to the many galleries, studios and shops that make up the Art District. The streets come alive with a festive atmosphere of visual art, music, entertainment and food to create a one-of-a-kind event in our community. Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference - MEAC Tournament March 9-14, 2009
Here's a first for the city of Winston-Salem: the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference - MEAC Tournament, in which 14 teams will compete at hoops at the LJVM Coliseum, March 9-14, 2009. A newcomer to the conference is Winston-Salem State University, which will transition from Division II to Division I in 2010. WSSU is playing host to an anticipated 10,000 + fans who will descend on the city for weeklong festivities.
Among the social events is a Greek Step show featuring a "Step Off" between the fraternities and sororities from the various universities. Other activities include a Celebrity Explosion that will take place at the Benton Convention Center. This event will feature stars from the sports and entertainment fields. Also on hand will be the Old School After Party featuring Tom Joyner; it will take place after the championship game on Saturday. The MEAC Tournament is a great opportunity for old and new friends to connect-and of course enjoy a great basketball tournament. The winner will advance to the NCAA College Basketball Playoffs. Finnegan's Wake St. Patrick's Day Party. Saturday March 14, 2009
Finnegan's Wake is hosting the mother of all St. Patrick's Day parties. On Saturday March 14, 2009 the restaurant is having an all-day St Paddy's extravaganza. From 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. revelers can feast on breakfast, lunch and dinner. All you pay is $25 and you can fill your belly with a number of Irish dishes. This all-inclusive price is good the entire day with the purchase of a wristband. Beverages are not included.
Also included throughout the day is live music. Four bands will take the stage throughout the afternoon and evening. But the party doesn't stop there. Finnegan's will be celebrating on the actual day dedicated to Ireland's patron saint on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 with live music by Evan and Dana. Great Decisions 2009 at Wake Forest University
This popular discussion series on foreign policy is back for its 25th consecutive season beginning Thursday, March 19 at 7 p.m. in Room A102 of the Scales Fine Arts Center on the WFU campus. The series runs through April 23 each week on Thursday. It is free and open to the public.
Sponsored nationwide by the Foreign Policy Association, the International Studies Office at WFU hosts the local effort by calling on area experts in the field to speak on the subject and lead a discussion. The series will address six of the hottest topics in current U.S. foreign policy, including Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Global Economy, Cuba, Human Rights and more.

The Junior League of Winston-Salem the 4th Annual Tour of Fine Kitchens - Saturday, March 21, 2009
The Junior League of Winston-Salem presents the 4th Annual Tour of Fine Kitchens on Saturday, March 21, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Area kitchen designers, cabinet makers, interior designers, architects and builders have come together to present an unprecedented showcase of exceptional kitchen concepts and innovation. The tour will feature 11 homes located in the city of Winston-Salem, including newly constructed and renovated houses.
Additionally, each kitchen will feature a local caterer or restaurant that will offer delicious samples of their culinary skills for tour-goers. Creativity: Worlds in the Making: A National Symposium March 18-20, 2009 @ Wake Forest University
Wake Forest University will be hosting "Creativity: Worlds in the Making: A National Symposium" March18-20, 2009. This national symposium in the "City of the Arts" advances the national discourse on creativity as a core literacy tool in today's global environment. The event will highlight emerging creative research and practice across disciplines within university settings as well as elaborating dynamic models for collaborations between the academy and society.
The dynamic and interactive format will combine traditional presentation, innovative performance and exhibitions with working sessions designed as a call for the revaluation of creativity in shaping an imaginative, humane and interdependent future. Symposium Themes will include: Creativity Considered as Literacy; Interdisciplinary Creative Process and Practice; Creative Engagement as Catalyst for Social Change; Creative Leadership and Collaboration. The goals of the three-day symposium are: to provide an intensive environment for inquiry into and experience of creativity; to contribute to the national discourse on creativity and entrepreneurship through knowledge and work-sharing; to stimulate university-wide and regional community-building through partnerships and networks; and to inspire and facilitate the launch of innovative proposals and initiatives.
Speakers include thought leaders in the arts, science, education and business. This should be an interesting symposium to help us participate in new ideas to bring our local and regional community forward.
