■ Red Sox: Third baseman Mike Lowell had fluid drained from his ailing right hip yesterday, and received an injection that might relieve inflammation in his surgically repaired joint.

The Red Sox will wait at least two days to determine whether the treatment was successful or whether Lowell needs to be placed on the disabled list, Manager Terry Francona said before last night's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Francona said Lowell had an injection of Synvisc -- a gel-like substance that sometimes provides relief for inflamed tissue. He said Lowell will undergo therapy today before the team decides how to proceed.

■ Brewers: Prospect Jeremy Jeffress was suspended for 100 games yesterday after his third violation of baseball's minor-league program for a drug of abuse.

Jeffress, 21, also was suspended for 50 games on Aug. 30, 2007. He was Milwaukee's top pick in the 2006 amateur draft, the 16th selection overall, and received a $1.55 million signing bonus.

He was 2-1 with a 2.18 ERA in five starts and one relief appearance for Class A Brevard County of the Florida State League when he was suspended yesterday.

■ Indians: Infielder Josh Barfield has been optioned to Class AAA Columbus by the Cleveland Indians, clearing a roster spot for newly acquired right-hander Chris Perez.

Perez was acquired Saturday from St. Louis for third baseman Mark DeRosa and reported yesterday. He was 1-1 with one save and a 4.18 ERA in 29 relief appearances for St. Louis, allowing two of 15 inherited runners to score.

■ Cubs: Outfielder Sam Fuld has been recalled by the Chicago Cubs from Class AAA Iowa to replace infielder Aaron Miles, who went on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended right elbow.

Fuld hit .410 in his last 10 games for Iowa and had a .398 average in June. He appeared in 14 games for the Cubs in 2007, going 0 for 6.

■ Mets: Center fielder Carlos Beltran was in Colorado yesterday to have a second opinion on his ailing right knee.

Beltran was consulting with noted knee specialist Dr. Richard Steadman at his Vail clinic. Beltran has an aching bone bruise in his knee and assistant general manager John Ricco says Beltran asked to have a second opinion.

Steadman primarily performs microfracture knee surgery on basketball players, but the Mets don't believe the injury has progressed to that point.

■ Rangers: Texas has promoted outfielder Julio Borbon to make his major league debut and bolster a short bench.

Right-handed Willie Eyre was optioned to Class AAA Oklahoma City. The Rangers had eight relievers with only three players on the bench before the move yesterday.

■ Wake Forest: Denis Healy was named the school's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator yesterday.

"Dennis is the perfect person to take our pitching staff to the next level," said Coach Tom Walter of the Deacons. "His ability to get the most out of each and every one of his pitchers is second to none in our business…."

Healy recently finished his fourth season as the head coach at Marist College, leading the Red Foxes to the 2009 NCAA Regionals. During his tenure at Marist, Healy had 11 players named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference team, including four first-team selections.

Healy and Walter have previously worked together at both George Washington and the University of New Orleans.

Healy, a native of Ballston Spa, N.Y., was a four-year starting pitcher at George Washington from 1993 through 1996.
