Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found yesterday in the underbrush next to the shoulder of Peters Creek Parkway.
Capt. David Clayton, who supervises detectives for the Winston-Salem Police Department, said that the body was found near the intersection of Peters Creek Parkway and Haversham Park Drive, which is near the Oliver's Crossing housing development on the city's south end.
A jogger saw the body at about 2 p.m. and called police, Clayton said.
"We don't know anything about the cause of death," Clayton said. "We have to wait for the autopsy."
Police identified the body as Jason Edward Perry, 34, of 4085 Village Park Court, an apartment development about a half-mile from where the body was found.
Clayton said that the body appeared to have been there about two days.
"We don't know exactly what happened," he said. "We are treating it as a suspicious death."
Investigators interviewed the jogger about the body, Clayton said. Police blocked off right southbound lane of Peters Creek Parkway to gather evidence and remove the body.
Traffic was delayed more than 3½ hours, but vehicles passed the scene in the left southbound lane.
Police placed barriers in front the body, shielding it from public view.
A Forsyth County medical examiner went to the scene, Clayton said, adding that an autopsy likely will be conducted at the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill.
Darlene Anderson, who lives in Oliver's Crossing, watched the scene from the intersection. She said that the neighborhood is typically a safe place.
"I'm shocked to see something like this happen here," Anderson said.
