Q. I am a 60-year-old unemployed, disabled veteran receiving a small monthly benefit and Supplemental Security Income. I can't pay my overdue property taxes, and the interest is growing every month. I will lose my house soon if I can't pay the amount owed. My credit is poor. Where can I get a small loan, grant or other help? -- J.M.
A. Call the county tax office and ask if they can work out a partial-payment plan. Pete Rodda, the tax assessor and collector, says they'd much rather work out something that's beneficial to both parties than to take action against a property owner. The earlier in the process you ask for help, the more
likely you will be to find it. The phone number is 703-2300.
You might also call Triad Disability Advocates, a private, nonprofit organization that helps elderly and disabled clients manage their financial affairs.
Kermit Bailey, who runs the organization, is experienced in helping others find their way through government procedures.
His phone number is 708-0499.
