Brown, Myers take Modified wins at Stadium
Blind draw plays a key role in the outcome of the second race; Miller has early axle problems

The man being chased and the one doing the chasing both ran away with victories at Bowman Gray Stadium last night.
Tim Brown reinforced his front-runner status with a win in the first of two 25-lap races for the featured Modified Division. Burt Myers, inadvertently helped by Brown's blind draw that put him on the pole for the second race, kept pace with a victory of his own.
It was all Brown in the first race, as it has been for much of the season.
He won for a fourth time this year and only a poor draw of the No. 12 starting position for the second race precluded him from a 13th consecutive top-10 finish. Brown has 11 top-five finishes in 13 races this season.
"It's going our way right now," Brown said. "We're just going to ride it as far as it will go."
Brown took the pole position for the first race with the fastest lap in qualifying, at 13.327 seconds (67.5 mph) on the quarter-mile track.
He held his position at the start and eased on to his 49th career victory in the stadium's top division. Randy Butner finished second and Michael Clifton was third.
Brown's draw of No. 12 put Burt Myers -- who finished 12th in the first race -- on the pole for the second race.
"I'm sure he wasn't too happy about it," Myers said. "But our car wasn't bad for the second race. We made some wholesale changes (between races) and it helped it out."
Brown said of Myers' good fortune: "He always seems to come out good no matter what. We were hoping to be able to capitalize on him having a bad qualifying run but we didn't. And our car was entirely too tight to pick up to gain some.
"I don't even look at the second race, as long as you don't tear the car up. It's a tough break for us not to be in the top 10 for the first time all year, but we won that first race tonight, we stayed consistent and we didn't tear anything up."
Myers overcame a poor qualifying performance to take his third victory of the season and 35th of his career. Brad Robbins finished second and Chris Fleming third.
Myers said that he is down to his last backup motor, and that it's so lacking power he's had to gamble with his car's setup -- unsuccessfully last night -- for qualifying.
"When we come back after the (July 4) break, we'll have my Roush-Yates Ford engine in it," Myers said. "We won't have to fight the horsepower problem any more."
Brown easily kept his lead in season standings for the top division, but did lose four points with the 12th-place finish in the second race. He leads Butner by 56 points and Myers by 62.
"I actually gained some points," Butner said. "We're not giving up. Tim's got a good lead and Tim's flying, but we're going to try our best to win this thing. You never know."
Myers said: "He's the one that has something to lose, and not the rest of us. So the rest of us are going to keep digging."
Junior Miller, who along with Brown and Myers has had a lock on winning championships at Bowman Gray for 14 years, had his night cut short early when his car's axle broke in the fifth lap of the first race.
Derek Stoltz endured 14 caution periods and resulting double-file restarts to win a 60-lap race for the Sportsman Division.
Stoltz took the lead in the third lap from David Adams and hung on from there for his third victory of the season. Gary Ledbetter finished second and maintained his lead in the season standings.
Joseph "Bobo" Brown led all the way in a 20-lap Street Stock race victory. Matt Cotner was eighth and leads the season standings.
Kevin L. Neal and Chris Lawing won 15-lap Stadium Stock races. A.J. Sanders regained his lead in Stadium Stock standings over Dale Barneycastle.
