■ Dr. Susan Sykes of Advance Chiropractic & Health Center at 2505 Neudorf Road in Clemmons is celebrating 20 years in practice in the Advance and Clemmons areas. She started her chiropractic practice in the Hillsdale area of Davie County on June 19, 1989. Over the years, Sykes has expanded her practice to include nutrition, acupuncture, massage and rehabilitative exercise therapy. She practices a specialized form of chiropractic called Sacro-occipital Technique. ■ Dr. J. Jeffrey Carr of Winston-Salem has been inducted as a fellow in the American College of Radiology. He is a vice chairman of clinical research and a professor of radiologic sciences, internal medicine and public-health sciences at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He specializes in cardiovascular imaging with CT and MRI.

■ R. Michael Wells Sr. was recently elected as the secretary and chairman-elect of the United Way of Forsyth County. He is a partner with Wells Jenkins Lucas & Jenkins, a law firm in Winston-Salem. He also writes a monthly column for the Winston-Salem Journal.

■ The distinction of magnet nursing status has been awarded to N.C. Baptist Hospital at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for the third time by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The award recognizes and honors the nursing staffs of hospitals that meet the nation's highest standards for nursing excellence.

■ Peebles Law Firm, PC announces the opening of its Bankruptcy Division. It will be headed by David H. Caffey. Caffey, a native of Winston-Salem, attended Reynolds High School and is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. Caffey graduated from the UNC Law School in 1978. His emphasis is in the areas of Bankruptcy and Real Estate Law. The Peebles Law Firm, PC is at 102 S. Cherry St., Winston-Salem.

■ The Burn Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has received verification by the American Burn Association, making it one of only five verified burn centers in the Southeast. Burn-center verification is an indicator that the center provides high quality patient care to burn patients from time of injury through rehabilitation.

■ The Northwest chapter of the N.C. Credit Union League won first place in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award competition. The chapter received the award at a recognition banquet at the 74th Annual Meeting of the N.C. Credit Union League.

The chapter is made up of 12 credit unions in the western part of the Piedmont Triad region. There are eight credit-union chapters statewide.

The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award recognizes and promotes credit unions' social responsibility efforts within the communities they serve.

The chapter won the award for its support of the Josh and Marie Reynolds Guest House in Winston-Salem. The guest house, which is scheduled to open in 2010, will provide affordable lodging for family members and caretakers of adult patients who visit Forsyth County medical facilities from out of town. The chapter committed to raise $50,000 for the guest house over a three-year period, and raised more than $10,000 of this goal last year. In addition, it secured a $20,000 matching grant from the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation.

Members Credit Union earned statewide recognition for community service and philosophy in action at the 74th Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Credit Union League in Pinehurst. Members received first place in the Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Award and second place in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award.

Wharton Gladden & Company, LLC, a private real-estate investment-banking group, has formed the Wharton Gladden Foundation to support charities in the Piedmont Triad area that provide services to those suffering from homelessness, substance abuse and domestic violence. The group sponsored a fundraiser for the foundation on May 30 at the Piedmont Club -- Algenon Cash's Charity Roast.

The Bloom Agency won four awards for marketing initiatives from The Communicator Awards, the leading international awards program honoring creative excellence in communication.

It won awards for the ME Banking campaign for Southern Community Bank and Trust, for Southern Community's 2007 annual report, for the 2008 recruitment campaign for Forsyth Technical Community College, and for a 2007 outdoor board for the Piedmont Wind Symphony.

■ A continuing collaboration between Que Pasa Media Network and two Wake Forest University faculty members has resulted in an award from the New America Media group. The award is for an Op-Ed piece, "Que Pasa Supports Barack Obama's Candidacy," that appeared in Que Pasa newspapers across North Carolina before the 2008 national elections. The column was co-written by Alejandro Manrique, Qué Pasa Media Network's executive editor and news director, and Wake Forest professors David Coates, Worrell Professor of Anglo-American Studies, and Peter Siavelis, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Fellow and Associate Professor.

Que Pasa also received an honorable mention in the Radio Programming on a Community Issue Award for the news story, "Mass Exodus of Hibics from North Carolina," which was developed and produced by Manrique.

Michael P. Barr, CAE, was honored with an endowed scholarship through the Education Foundation of the CCIM Institute for his service and dedication to the commercial real-estate and investment industry.

The endowed scholarship program was created to honor Barr for his contributions to the N.C. CCIM Chapter and other real-estate associations in North Carolina. Barr manages the N.C. CCIM Chapter and is the chief executive officer of the Greensboro Regional REALTORS® Association. In addition, Barr manages the REALTOR® Commercial Alliance of Greensboro and the local chapters of several other real-estate related associations.

■ Butler + Burke, LLP, an accounting firm based in Winston-Salem, has awarded the Dalton L. McMichael Scholarship for Excellence to Kalyn Hamilton of Stoneville. The $1,000 scholarship is presented annually to high-school seniors at Dalton L. McMichael High School in Mayodan.

Kalyn had many honors. She was on the honor roll all four years in high school and received the Einstein Award and the Superintendent's Scholastic Achievement Award. She also received the Band Director's Award and the Marching Band Leadership Award. Kalyn participated in numerous extracurricular activities, including playing in the marching band for four years. One year she was woodwind captain and she was drum major for two years. She took several AP courses and will attend Wake Forest University this fall.

Dr. Robert Schwartz, a pediatrician at Brenner Children's Hospital, has been awarded a grant from the N.C. Health and Wellness Trust Fund for a pilot study to prevent childhood obesity.

The $70,000 grant will be administered through the N.C. Pediatric Society Foundation's "Healthy, Fit and Strong Program." This program will support a childhood obesity-prevention pilot project at four community-level sites across the state.

More than 80 families will be enrolled in the pilot project in Goldsboro, Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Winston-Salem. Parents will receive weekly nutrition consultations with a registered dietitian. Physical activity will be provided by the YMCA three times a week.

Junior Achievement of Central Carolinas, Inc. received a $25,000 grant from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS.

The grant will be used to educate students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work-force readiness, and financial literacy, through experiential hands-on programs. The grant will also be used to sponsor a UPS shop in JA BizTown™, a program that combines a curriculum approach with a hands-on lab site for learning. The purpose is to help young people imagine, investigate, and become citizens of their own city for a day.

Cindy Logan, the senior area director of the American Heart Association's Mid-Atlantic Affiliate Triad Office, has been awarded the Rome Betts Award of Excellence. This national award is given to 24 people each year throughout the country.

Logan received the award for raising $103,192 in new dollars, making the Start! Tanglewood Heart and Stroke Walk Number one in the country in new event dollars for the Metropolitan Statistical Areas 101-200 in 2008.

She joined the American Heart Association in January of 1999, and has primarily worked on the Start! Tanglewood Heart and Stroke Walk. The walk raises money to fight heart disease and stroke, the number one and number three killers in the U.S.

■ The following members of the design staff at Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce Architects, PA have earned designation as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design: Larry Robbs, Rence Callahan, Clark Pierce, Steve Hastings and Brian Kubecki.

■ The Animal Emergency Services of Forsyth County has opened at 7781 North Point Blvd., beside Burger King and across from Burlington Coat Factory. The animal hospital offers small-animal emergency care after hours and on weekends and holidays. It also accepts referral patients from local veterinarians when overnight care is needed. It is owned by Dr. Amy Jessup, who also owns the Rural Hall Animal Hospital, the University Parkway Animal Hospital, and the Almost Home Boarding, Grooming, and Veterinary Clinic.

Linda J. Porrino, Ph.D., has been named chairwoman of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, effective Wednesday.

Porrino joined the medical school faculty in 1990 and has been professor of physiology and pharmacology since 1997. She was named interim chairwoman of the department in 2008.

■ Excalibur Enterprises Inc., a marketing-communications company based in Winston-Salem, has added Michael Schenck and Robert Allen to its management team as the company starts its Advancement Services division. Schenck joins Excalibur as a sales executive after four years as director of client relations at Barton Cotton in Baltimore, Md. Allen will be a senior consultant.

Matthew Trenchard has joined Mitchell Wealth Management Group, LLC as a financial planner. He has 8½ years of experience in the financial industry.

Dr. Delina H. Nash has been named full-time medical director of Hospice of the Piedmont.

She is a native of Florida and most recently served with Cogent Hospitalists at High Point Regional Health System.

■ The Clarks Group has named Piers Clarkson as the director of executive recruiting. Clarkson has more than 18 years experience in the staffing industry and has been with The Clarks Group since 1996.

■ BB&T has promoted Travis Rhodes to senior vice president. Rhodes joined the bank in 1999 and is a regional corporate banker in BB&T's Corporate Banking department.

■ BB&T has promoted Sharon Jeffries-Jones to executive vice president. Jeffries-Jones, who joined the bank in 1979, is the director of BB&T's CRA Community Reinvestment Act and Community Development department.

■ C. Derrik Hiatt has been hired as an electronic-resources librarian for the Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest University. Hiatt comes to the position after six years as the assistant serials librarian for the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

■ The Realtor team of Pam Boyle and Allen Gentry has joined Allen Tate Realtors® Stratford Road office. Boyle and Gentry join a team of 44 licensed Realtors.

■ T.J. Reynolds-Emwanta has joined the law firm of Spilman Thomas & Battle PLLC's Winston-Salem office as a certified paralegal. Reynolds-Emwanta has experience as a paralegal with a variety of entities.

■ Piedmont Federal Savings Bank has hired Lisa M. Snowden as chief talent officer and senior vice president. She will be responsible for the human relations functions for the bank, including: employee relations management, pension, benefits and compensation, training and related compliance.

Piedmont has promoted two employees. Tim Brooker, who has been with the company since 2000, has been promoted to vice president of financial reporting. Derry Barnhardt has been named assistant vice president and manager of accounting. Barnhardt joined Piedmont Federal in 2006.

Jason M. Robertson has joined Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce Architects, PA as a CADD draftsman. Robertson has eight years of experience.

■ Liberty Hardware Manufacturing Corp., based in Winston-Salem and a division of Masco, has hired these people: Debra Hanson, credit analyst; Nancy Mould, marketing manager; Tripp Parks, process-improvement manager; Cheryl Pearce, accounts payable clerk; and Scott Wargo, national account manager.

■ Verve Living Systems, a Masco Corp. brand and lighting-control system, has hired these people at its corporate office in Winston-Salem at 140 Business Park Drive: Joseph Clark, regional sales manager; Stephen Rotar, business coordinator; and Dennis Carignan, field technical manager.
