PEMBROKE
A Pembroke mother who shot a man accused of molesting her daughter has been charged with assault, according to the Robeson County Sheriff's Office.
The Fayetteville Observer reported that the woman was charged Thursday with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, said Maj. Howard Branch. Information about the woman's bail was not available. She was still being interviewed by investigators late Thursday afternoon and had not gone before a magistrate, Branch said.
The woman's name is being withheld so as not to identify her daughter.
The woman is accused of shooting Ray Demery Jr. after she confronted him about allegations he'd molested her daughter on Saturday.
The woman said she left her daughter with Demery that evening while she and a friend went to Pembroke to run an errand. The child called her mother's cell phone and told her to return home quickly, a Sheriff's Office report stated.
When the mother arrived, she found Demery locked out of the home, the report stated. The girl told her mother that when she awoke, she found Demery touching her inappropriately.
The mother confronted Demery and he denied what happened, the report stated. The mother then started shooting at Demery.
Demery was shot in the side and in the arm.
He initially told lawmen he was shot while walking down Union Chapel Road. He later admitted the girl's mother shot him, but he said he didn't know why.
Demery, 43, of Lumberton was charged with first-degree sexual offense. His bail was set at $120,000.
