SOUTHERN SHORES
Police say a Virginia minister has died on a North Carolina beach after being pulled from the Outer Banks surf.
The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported Thursday that 62-year-old Edwin Clayton Thornton III of Chesterfield, Va., was pulled from the surf at Southern Shores on Wednesday.
Southern Shores Police Chief David Kole said Thornton was alive when he was pulled out of the water, but died a short time later. Kole says it appeared the minister had a heart attack.
Thornton had been senior pastor at Tomahawk Baptist Church in Midlothian for 34 years.
