Greetings again, Smittyheads:
So, last week I was at a local Triad BBQ joint having dinner (I've been on a serious "hawg" kick lately). I struck up a conversation with someone at another table talking about local events and the odd news of late. It then dawned on both of us that half of 2009 is about over. Gone. Zip. Ka-Pooie! Time flies when you are having too much fun. I know I am.
Coming up in this edition: a fundraiser to support young ladies to dress for success; a new restaurant grand opening and support of a local non-profit; latest from the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership blog; and last call on the Smitty's Notes "Best of Winston-Salem" Contest.
Now to the business at hand...
Bring your friends and co-workers to Finnigan's Wake Irish Pub & Grill for an enjoyable evening of light refreshments. Enjoy an easygoing atmosphere, learn more about Dress for Success Winston-Salem and sample a variety of wines. Your contribution is essential to help raise funds to file for non- profit status. This will enable the non-profit to start providing essential services to those who need it most in our community.
Dress for Success Winston-Salem is a non-profit organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Brixx Wood Fired Pizza at Shoppes on Little Creek Grand Opening and benefit for the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem - Sunday, June 28,2009.
Brixx Wood Fired Pizza, famous for its wood-burning ovens and craft-brewed beers, will have its grand opening celebration June 28 at Shoppes on Little Creek.
The festivities will run from 12 to 6 p.m., and 10 percent of the day's proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem. The family-friendly event will feature live music, free beer from Foothills Brewing, pizza specials, face painting and a balloon artist. Brixx also offers half-price bottles of wine every Sunday.
The popular Charlotte, N.C.-based chain is a favorite among diners in Tennessee and the Carolinas, including Greensboro, Raleigh and Chapel Hill. The restaurants serve 14 wines by the glass and 24 beers on tap.
The centerpiece of the 3,000-square-foot Winston-Salem restaurant is a wood-burning oven, which enhances the natural flavors of the restaurant's pizzas and focaccia breads. In addition to its open kitchen, Brixx features a bakery area enclosed by glass that allows children of all ages to observe the creation of fresh-baked breads and pizzas. The restaurant has 113 seats indoors and 38 seats outside on the patio.

"Hot town, summer in the city, back of my neck getting burnt and gritty... Feeling hot this summer? Kool off at a Kool Kreme Social at Krispy Kreme.
In honor of their new line of soft serve--ptly named Kool Kreme--our local doughnut company is hosting fun-filled "socials," which will benefit local nonprofits at their Triad stores. The Socials will include an afternoon of kool surprises including prizes for the first 25 guests to arrive at each location as well as lots of other fun stuff.
So head on over to the 5912 University Parkway store on Sunday, June 28 from 2 to 5 or the Stratford Road store on Sunday, July 26 from 2 to 5. Twenty percent of sales during the Social at the University Parkway store will benefit SciWorks and twenty percent of sales at the Stratford Road Kool Kreme Social will benefit the Children's Museum of Winston-Salem.

It wouldn't be a Fourth of July week without the wicked return of Heavy Rebel Weekender to the Arts District. Now in its ninth year, the three-day musical event will be held July 3, 4 and 5, with more than 70 groups playing everything including rock 'n' roll, punk, rockabilly, country and swing. It is arguably the most interesting downtown event of the year. The festival's theme highlights the 1950s era, in which James Dean made rebellion tragically hip and spawned an entire trend in pop culture.
On tap for the weekend are vendors, vintage clothing, artists selling original creations, and sculptures from old car parts. One of the main attractions is the Saturday Custom Car and Bike Show on Trade Street, which features custom, restored and classic vehicles made prior to 1968. One rule: No Ford Mustangs or Chevy Cameros are allowed unless they are downright cool in appearance—and the organizers' emphasize "really cool". Get it?
For the out-of-the ordinary, there is the popular Mud Wrestling Contest, which has moved up from Jell-O in previous years, a Beer-Guzzlin'-in-60-Seconds Contest and a Banana Puddin'-Eating Contest. Scary! Full refreshments will be provided during the entire event near the Millennium Center. Tickets for the event are $70 (3-day pass) and $35 (a single day pass) in advance, $90 (3-day pass) and $35 (a single day pass) the day of the event; they can be purchased in advance at the Web site and at the door. The Millennium Center is located 101 West Fifth Street. For visuals, visit http://www.heavyrebel.net.
Evening with Eight-Plus Smitty! is the dining concept that simplifies the process of meeting new friends in the Winston-Salem community, while giving you a chance to learn. The series returns from taking a break this winter. This sophisticated and less awkward way of meeting new people over good food, good conversation and good company. The fall session, will run twice a month from August to October.
On top of meeting great people and talking about life in Winston-Salem, each dinner has a guest speaker who helps set the tone for the evening. Past speakers have included notables in the business, entertainment and non-profit sectors, and various civic leaders. Plus some downright cool people you wouldn't normally sit down and have dinner with. In planning the next session, I have decided to ask YOU whom you would like to have dinner with this next session.
Is there someone whom you have been interested in finding out more about? Learning what they do, who they are and in some cases, why they do the things they do? (Still with me?) I have found that the guest speakers are more than willing to take time out their busy schedules to have dinner with interested members in the community. So, whom do you want meet? Shoot me some e-mail at Evening with Eight-Plus Smitty! Speaker Input, and we'll see what we can do.
