Jason Capel, a former standout forward at North Carolina, has been hired as an assistant men's basketball coach at Appalachian State.
The hiring completes Coach Buzz Peterson's three-man staff, which includes Matt McMahon and Jamie Kachmarik. McMahon will enter his 10th season as an assistant at ASU. Kachmarik, who was an assistant under Peterson at Coastal Carolina, began work at ASU on June 1.
Capel, 29, who has played pro basketball in Italy, Japan and Serbia and has worked as a television analyst for college-basketball games, will be a basketball coach for the first time. He will begin July 1.
Capel's father, Jeff Capel Jr., is an assistant coach for the Charlotte Bobcats and former coach at Old Dominion. Jason Capel's brother, Jeff, is the head coach at Oklahoma.
"I've known that family for a long time," Peterson said. "His dad and brother have had a lot of success and they all know the ins and outs of collegiate athletics.
"Jason has really wanted to get into coaching and I'm excited to have him. We had a lot of candidates but every one I talked to about Jason said great things. That name goes a long way in North Carolina and Virginia."
Capel played under Bill Guthridge and Matt Doherty at North Carolina from 1998 through 2002. He helped the Tar Heels to a Final Four appearance in 2000 and led the Tar Heels in scoring (15.6 points a game) and rebounding (8.6 a game) in 2001-02.
Kachmarik was an assistant at Coastal Carolina for six seasons, including two under Peterson. He was the primary recruiter for the Chanticleers, who had their first 20-win season in 13 years in 2005-2006 in Peterson's first season.
Kachmarik was an assistant at William & Mary for three years, and began his career as a video coordinator at Ohio State. He is a Bowling Green graduate.
McMahon was a guard during Peterson's first tenure as coach at Appalachian, and has served as an assistant at Appalachian under both Peterson and Houston Fancher.
