The National Park Service is recruiting volunteers for a program of beach watchers to help prevent crime and vandalism along North Carolina's Outer Banks.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore officials say the program is designed to help employees monitor inappropriate or illegal activities and promote good use of the park's facilities.
Volunteers would be trained to help the park service watch for compliance with beach closures, crowding and unsafe conditions.
Community leaders and concerned park users helped create the program during discussions with park personnel about ways to prevent vandalism and encroachment on areas closed for rare bird and turtle nesting.
