The driver whose car struck three motorcyclists on U.S. 21 Sunday in southern Yadkin County, killing one, has died.
Daniel Michaels, 37, of Hamptonville, died yesterday, N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Keller said.
Investigators had been preparing to charge Michaels with driving while impaired had he recovered, Keller said. He had taken to Wake Forst University Baptist Medical Center.
About 5 p.m. Sunday, Michaels, driving a 2006 Pontiac, crossed the center line of U.S. 21, hitting the three motorcyclists. Robert Wayne Mantio. 70, of Sandston, Va., died Sunday. The two other motorcyclists were treated at Wake Forest Baptist for non-life-threatening injuries.
