A motorcyclist was killed in a four-vehicle crash in southern Yadkin County yesterday, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.
The incident occurred about 5:15 p.m. on U.S. 21 about one mile south of Lone Hickory Road. The highway patrol said that Daniel Michaels, 37, of Hamptonville, was driving a 2006 Pontiac when he crossed the center line and struck three motorcyclists in the other lane, said Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Keller.
One of the motorcyclists, Robert Wayne Mantlo, 70, of Sandston, Va., died. Two others were taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, Keller said.
Michaels was also taken to Wake Forest Baptist. A medical center spokeswoman said Micheals is in critical condition.
Michaels will be charged with driving while impaired, Keller said.
The investigation is continuing, the highway patrol said.
