A man drowned yesterday evening in Belews Lake, near the Rockingham and Stokes County line, WGHP/FOX8 reported.

The drowning happened at a water- access area off Plummer Road near the Humphreys Ridge Family Campground, said Sam Page, Rockingham County's sheriff.

Authorities had not identified the man, who was in his late 20s to early 30s.

Emergency-management officials said that the 911 call came in just before 7 p.m, WGHP/FOX8 said. The body was recovered shortly after rescue teams arrived on the scene. Boaters in the area said that the man had been swimming in the lake.

Man, 55, charged with killing fellow assisted-living resident

DOBSON -- A resident of an assisted- living home in North Carolina has been charged with murder in the beating death of another resident.

Dobson police told WXII-12 that surveillance video at David's House shows that Daniel East, 55, hit Jeremiah Love, 27, several times with a metal cane last month.

Police Chief Shawn Myers said that the owners of the home first thought that Love had been hurt when he fell as he tried to get away from East.

But investigators say that East told them that he hit Love in the head and shoulders with his cane because Love cursed at him and kicked his dog.

East is charged with second-degree murder, but Myers says that the charges may be upgraded. He remains in jail, and it is unclear whether he has an attorney.

Church destroyed by second of intentionally set fires

CLAYTON -- Authorities say that a church in Clayton has been destroyed by an arsonist exactly a month after an intentionally set blaze severely damaged the building.

Firefighters were called to Mount Calvary Baptist Church around 2 a.m. yesterday, officials say.

Investigators say that the fire appears to have started in a way similar to a May 6 fire that heavily damaged the church.

The congregation had started repairs on the building, authorities say, but yesterday's fire has likely gutted the church. Police plan to offer a reward in the case.
