On Wednesday, the staff at Nancy Reynolds Elementary school will give alumni and other members of the community the chance to stroll the halls and reminisce one last time.
The school will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday, the last day of the school year.
The school, which the Reynolds tobacco family built and donated to the community in 1923, will be torn down.
A new school will be built with an exterior that is similar to the old one.
Members of the Nancy Reynolds Historical Committee and many others in the community had hoped that the historic school would be renovated. But, after a feasibility study by Ersoy Brake Appleyard Architects of Winston-Salem, school officials concluded that the school was in such disrepair that a new school was the better option. The estimated cost is about $9.4 million.
While a school is being built during the 2009-10 school year, Nancy Reynolds students will be studying in pods placed on the campus of Pinnacle Elementary School.
Along with its historic home, Nancy Reynolds is losing its principal. Rusty Hall, the 2009 Stokes County Principal of the Year, has accepted a job with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system as the principal of Rural Hall Elementary School.
At the open house, T-shirts, afghans and Christmas ornaments will be sold. For more information, call Nancy Reynolds at 336-351-2480 or check online www.nancyreynolds.stokes.k12.nc.us.
