Duplin County drops proposal that would have halted school sports programs

KENANSVILLE
Football season will go on as scheduled in one North Carolina school system after county commissioners voted to lift restrictions on money targeted for athletics and extracurricular programs.
WWAY-TV in Wilmington reports that Duplin County commissioners had proposed new restrictions on spending that would have halted all athletics and programs like JROTC.
The vote by commissioners lifted restrictions on $850,000. However, the board of education says instructional spending is still restricted, and that could mean layoffs for assistant principals, teachers,and teaching assistants.
Board members and county commissioners will meet at the end of the month to discuss lifting more spending restrictions.
