True Textiles lays off 84 people at Elkin plant

Elkin - True Textiles Inc. is laying off 84 employees in Elkin.
A company official could not be reached for comment, but John Holcomb, Elkin's interim town manager, said today that the company informed Mayor Leslie Hutchens of the permanent layoffs in a letter last week.
"Based on my understanding they will still have about 200 employees remaining at that facility," he said.
The company said that the job cuts are due to the current economic downturn, Holcomb said.
"They've been reducing their work force pretty consistently over the last year or so," he said.
According to True Textile's Web site, the company, which is based in Grand Rapids, Mich., has four manufacturing plants in the United States. The commercial-fabrics company also has a distribution center in Quebec, Canada, and a plant and distribution center in Ningbo, China.
