■ Nationals: Don't expect a lot of change with Jim Riggleman in the Washington dugout.
Riggleman held his first practice yesterday as the interim manager of the Nationals. He praised Manny Acta, the fired manager, saying that Acta "did all the right things, so there's not a lot of changes to make."
Riggleman, who was Acta's bench coach, said that maybe the players will respond to a different voice. Acta was dismissed Monday after 2½ seasons. The Nationals' 26-61 record is the worst in baseball.
His Nationals debut will be today, when Washington opens a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs.
■ Pirates: Reliever Tyler Yates has undergone right-elbow surgery and will miss the rest of the season.
Yates, out since mid May, isn't expected to resume pitching for five to six months. His status for the start of next season is uncertain.
Yates, a right-hander attempted to rehabilitate an injury that was initially described as elbow inflammation, but was shut down last week after showing little progress. He had surgery to repair the ulnar-collateral ligament yesterday in Birmingham, Ala.
Yates, 31, was 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in 15 games before going on the 15-day disabled list on May 15. Yates had reconstructive surgery on the same elbow in 2002 and right shoulder surgery in 2005.
■ Twins: Minnesota is recalling right-hander Kevin Mulvey from Class AAA Rochester to add some depth to its bullpen.
Mulvey was 3-6 with a 3.93 ERA in 17 starts for the Red Wings this year. He came over from the New York Mets in the trade for Johan Santana before last season.
To make room, the Twins optioned third catcher Jose Morales to Rochester. He hit .343 in 32 games with the Twins.
The move will be made official before Friday's game.
■ East Carolina: Coach Billy Godwin hired Nick Schnabel as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, the school said in a release.
Schnabel, an ECU alumni, will also serve as infield instructor.
Schnabel served as the hitting instructor, recruiting coordinator and third-base coach at Liberty for the past two seasons when the Flames compiled a 68-47-1 record and made two appearances in the Big South Championship game.
■ U.S.-Japan: Japan defeated the United States 8-3 yesterday to even the college-baseball championship series at 2-2 and force a deciding fifth game.
Shingo Kamegai hit a two-run opposite field home run in the fourth inning to give Japan a 5-1 lead. Team USA had 10 hits in the game but stranded 16 runners.
Game five will be played today in Tokyo.
