An Iron Station man died Friday after a car driven by his wife went off the road and hit two trees in Davie County.

The wreck happened about 3:05 p.m. Friday on Interstate 40, just 5.4 miles west of Mocksville.

Robert Kellen, 76, was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

Trooper M.W. Whitener said that Kellen and his wife, Tone Duncan, 68, were traveling east on Interstate 40 in Davie County when their car ran off the left side of the roadway into the median. The vehicle then traveled back over the lane and off the right side of the roadway, where it hit two trees, rolled over and came to rest on its top.

Duncan did not suffer life-threatening injuries, troopers said.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation.

Black moved to prison in Georgia

CHARLOTTE -- Former N.C. House Speaker Jim Black is being moved from a prison in Pennsylvania to one in Georgia.

More than 150 of Black's friends had written prison officials asking for leniency because of the failing health of Black, 74, and his wife.

Former Mecklenburg commissioner Parks Helms said that Black was being transferred to a prison in Jessup, Ga., about 300 miles south of Charlotte. Black had been serving his 63-month sentence in Lewisburg, Pa., after his conviction for accepting illegal payments as speaker.

Helms says that Black's wife, Betty, has Lou Gehrig's disease. Attorney Jim Craven of Durham wrote to the U.S. pardon attorney citing Black's "wretched health" and eye problems.

Black is a Democrat from Matthews.

Woman killed by father of unborn baby

CHARLOTTE -- Authorities say a pregnant woman was shot and killed by the father of her unborn child, who then shot himself.

Multiple media outlets said that Yumeka Caldwell, 21, died in her apartment soon after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police investigated her complaint Friday morning that she had received a threatening phone call from Antonio Phifer.

Police spokesman Robert Fey said that officers spoke to Caldwell when they saw Phifer outside the building and gave chase. They then followed a car Phifer was known to travel in and stopped that vehicle, but Phifer was not inside.

Soon after, dispatchers got a call from Caldwell's apartment complex, neighbors saying they had heard several gunshots.

Officers returned to the apartment and found the bodies.

Police say that Phifer shot Caldwell before shooting himself.

Inmate escapes in bagel truck

CHAPEL HILL -- Authorities were searching yesterday for a work-release inmate who escaped Friday night in a bagel truck.

Multiple media outlets say that Roderick Lee Baldwin, 45, was working at a bagel shop when he took off. N.C. Department of Correction spokesman Keith Acree says Baldwin stole $400 and a white van with Alpine Bagel written on the side.

Baldwin was serving a maximum 15-year sentence as a convicted habitual felon at the Orange Correctional Center. He was scheduled for release in 2011.

Corrections records say Baldwin escaped custody in 1989 when he was serving 5 years for breaking-and-entering and fraud convictions.
