The Big Lebowski will be the first film shown in Movies at the Greenspot, a series of free outdoor screenings in downtown Winston-Salem that will start Sunday.

The movies will be shown on a 15-by-9-foot screen in a grassy lot (the "Greenspot") on the corner of Sixth and Liberty streets.

A different movie will be shown each Sunday at 9 p.m.

Lebowski, a 1998 comedy from directors Joel and Ethan Coen, stars Jeff Bridges as a mellow dude who gets mixed up in a crime caper. The film is rated R for strong language, drug content, sexuality and brief violence.

The July 19 film will be Back to the Future, the 1985 comedy with Michael J. Fox as an '80s teen who is transported back to the 1950s and meets his parents during their high-school years. It is rated PG.

"The real drive here is to open up downtown and have something fun and easy to do," said Margaret Norfleet Neff, one of the organizers of the screenings. She said that the initial screenings are a test run and the organizers hope to hear from audiences about what other films they would like to see.

Additional films will be announced online at atthegreenspot.blogspot.com. Screenings will continue through Sept. 27.

Audio will be played through FM radio signals -- there is no other sound system, so people should bring their radios, headsets or boom boxes. Beer, wine and nonalcoholic drinks will be for sale, with a "No BYOB" policy. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.

The movies are sponsored by the Millennium Fund, the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership and ISP Sports.

The screenings are subject to weather.

In case of inclement weather, updates will be posted by 3 p.m. each Sunday at athegreenspot.blogspot.com.
