SHAKE YOUR GROOVE THING:
Rob DeBoer, Tony Grace and their band Four80East will bring their honey-smooth jazz groove to Corpening Plaza this weekend for Friday's installment of the Downtown Summer Music Series' Downtown Jazz. It's an easy and -- best of all -- free way to ease into the weekend from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
100 POINTS IF YOU GET STATHAM!:
Forget that lame 2008 remake of Death Race 2000, and check out the original. It's an over-the-top 1976 satire about a cross-country motor race/reality show where the drivers (including the late David Carradine, pictured) try to kill as many pedestrians as possible for fame, fortune and a chance to hobnob with the President. It's the first film in the four-week Attack of the B-Movies film series, which will be shown Fridays at midnight at the Carousel Luxury Cinemas, 1305 Battleground Ave. in Greensboro. The other films will be Zombie (July 17), Night of the Comet (July 24) and Demons (July 31). Each film includes at least 15 minutes of trashy trailers. Tickets are $4, and beer is $1.
COUNTRY BOY:
It would be easy to call young singer/songwriter Caleb Caudle's sound Americana, but his style is so much more -- his second album, Stay On, is more electric than twang, but doused with harmonica and harmonies.
Caudle is one of Winston-Salem's brightest musical stars. See him with his band, The Bayonets, next week at the Garage, 110 W. Seventh St., with the Lonely H. The show is at 9 p.m. Admission is $5.
FIGHT SCENES: Ever wondered what would happen if Mike Tyson squared off against Muhammad Ali in his prime? They're among the more than 40 boxers you can play in Fight Night Round 4, available now for PlayStation3 and Xbox 360. The game features ultra-realistic graphics, new game play that adapts to your style of fighting, and more. This is Tyson's first appearance in a boxing game. For more dueling action, check out Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, a visually stunning Spaghetti Western video game for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. It's a prequel to the 2007 game Call of Juarez, telling the story of two brothers in the Wild West as they desert the Confederate Army and become mercenaries. And if you want more sports action, try The Bigs 2, a new Major League Baseball game, out this week from 2K Sports for PS3, Xbox 360, PlayStation2, Wii, Nintendo and DS.
STATE OF AFFAIRS: MTV's 1990s cult hit The State is finally coming to DVD. The sketch comedy series was known for its subversive humor, surreal gags and oddball characters. The cast included performers who went on to appear in such shows as Reno 911!, Stella, Viva Variety, and VH1's I Love the 70s, 80s and 90s clip shows. The State: The Complete Series, a five-disc boxed set, will be released Tuesday. Extras include commentaries, unaired sketches, and interviews. To see more recent work by State alumni, check out Reno 911! The Complete Sixth Season, which came to DVD this week, and the new series Michael and Michael Have Issues, with Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter, which will debut Wednesday on Comedy Central.
