Dash's Edwards silences Hillcats

Winston-Salem gets early lead, makes it stand up in 5-1 win

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Justin Edwards limited Lynchburg to one run on four hits in seven innings and the Winston-Salem Dash beat the Hillcats 5-1 last night.

The Dash pounced on starting pitcher Matt McSwain of the Hillcats for three runs in the first inning.

Left fielder Tyler Kuhn, who matched a season high with four hits, and second baseman Dale Mollenhauer singled to put runners on first and second with one out.

Third baseman Brent Morel followed with a run-scoring double to score the game's first run.

Designated hitter Seth Loman connected on a two-run single to give Winston-Salem a 3-0 lead.

The Dash added two runs in the seventh inning against reliever Mike Colla.

Mollenhauer hit a one-out single and stole second base. Morel drove in Mollenhauer with his second double of the game off the right-field wall.

It was also Morel's team-leading 45th RBI of the season.

One batter later, right fielder Salvador Sanchez, who finished with three hits, smacked an RBI double to put Winston-Salem in front 5-0.

The Hillcats finally touched Edwards for a run in the seventh inning when Jordy Mercer singled and Matt Hague doubled to start the inning. Eric Fryer's ground out scored Mercer. Winston-Salem reliever Nate Jones kept Lynchburg scoreless in the final two innings to preserve the victory.

McSwain (7-4) took the loss for Lynchburg, allowing three runs on nine hits in five innings of work.

The Dash and Hillcats will play again tonight at City Stadium. The Dash will send Gregory Infante (0-0) to the mound for his Carolina League debut, while the Hillcats will counter with Chi-Hung Cheng (6-3, 3.78).

The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Notes: With its 11-10 win over Lynchburg on Thursday night, the Dash improved to 19-10 in one-run games this season. The 29 one-run games are the most in the Carolina League. … Thursday night was the first time Winston-Salem has won when trailing after eight innings. The Dash was 0-25 when trailing after eight innings before Thursday night's win. … In the past three Dash victories, the opponent has combined to commit 14 errors. The Hillcats made four errors last night and Potomac committed five errors in both game one (a 13-10 Dash win) and game three (a 11-6 Dash win) of their four-game series with Winston-Salem this week at Wake Forest Baseball Park. … Logan Johnson's season-high five-hit performance on Thursday night topped his four-hit game on June 28. ... With nine hits in his past three games, Johnson, the Dash's catcher, has lifted his batting average from .240 to .284.
