■ NASCAR's Whelen Southern Modified Tour will resume today with a 150-lap race at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro. Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., and race time is 8 p.m.
George Brunnhoelzl of West Babylon, N.Y., leads the season standings by two points over Andy Seuss of Hampstead, N.H.
Brian Loftin of Lexington, the tour's defending champion, and former champion L.W. Miller of Dushore, Pa., are six-time winners at Caraway. Burt Myers of Walnut Cove has been the top qualifier a record eight times in tour races at Caraway.
Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn., the reigning champion in NASCAR's Whelen Modified Tour, won the most recent Whelen Southern Modified Tour race at Caraway, on April 11.
■ Kent Peckham of Statesville strengthened his points lead in the featured Late Model Division with a victory at Friendship Speedway in Elkin last Saturday.
Joel Bray of Elkin (Limited Sportsman) and Billy Robbins of Hamptonville (Four Cylinder) also won, and Jeff Parsons of Union Grove, the leader in the Limited Sportsman and V-8 divisions, added a victory in a V-8 race.
■ Noel Tucker of Pilot Mountain was the winner in the featured Steel Head Late Model Division last Saturday at 311 Fastrack in Pine Hall.
Other winners included Mitchell Coble of Mount Airy (Crate Late Model) and Donnie Campbell of Greensboro (Limited Sportsman).
The next races at 311, which will feature the touring Carolina Clash Series, are scheduled July 11.
■ There will be no racing Saturday night at Bowman Gray Stadium, in traditional deference to the July 4 holiday.
The season leaders are Tim Brown of Cana, Va. (Modified), Gary Ledbetter of Lexington (Sportsman), Matt Cotner of Rural Hall (Street Stock) and A.J. Sanders of Mocksville (Stadium Stock).
■ Among the winners at Rolling Thunder Raceway in Ararat, Va., last Saturday were Mitchell Coble of Mount Airy (Crate Late Model), Joel Bray of Elkin (Super Street) and Robbie Brown of Hays (Mini Stock).
■ PIT NOTES … A 150-lap race for NASCAR's Whelen Modified and Whelen Southern Modified tours at Bristol Motor Speedway on Aug. 18 will be televised by Speed. The broadcast, on a 45-minute tape delay, will begin at 7 p.m…. An ASA Southern Modified Race Tour event scheduled July 11 at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont has been postponed. A makeup date hasn't been set…. Alex Yontz of Walnut Cove was the winner of the 200-lap Late Model portion of the Rusty Harpe Memorial at Caraway Speedway on Wednesday night.
