NEW YORK -- The NFL has suspended linebacker Calvin Pace of the New York Jets for four games without pay for violating its policy on performance-enhancing substances. Pace -- a first-round draft pick out of Wake Forest in 2003 -- will miss New York's first four games of the season and will be eligible to return for a Monday night game at Miami on Oct. 12.

In a statement issued by the team yesterday, Pace said that the suspension is a result of taking an over-the-counter dietary supplement that he was unaware violated the NFL's policy.

Pace is eligible to participate in preseason practices and games. He is in his second season with the Jets after five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

"I am responsible for what I put into my body and I should have paid closer attention to the league's guidelines," Pace said. "I regret that this has happened and apologize to my teammates, the entire Jets organization, as well as the fans. Hopefully, this does not distract from our ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl."

The team also issued a statement: "We respect the league's decision and look forward to Calvin's return for our Monday night game at Miami."

More football

Three Appalachian State football games will be televised on SportSouth this coming season as part of the SoCon Saturday package, Southern Conference officials announced yesterday.

ASU's games at Wofford (Oct. 17) and Elon (Nov. 14) and at home against Georgia Southern (Oct. 24) will be televised on SportSouth, with each starting at 3 p.m.

ASU's opener at East Carolina also will be televised live, on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN).

The SoCon Saturday package will start Sept. 19, with coverage of Western Carolina at Georgia Southern. Elon's game at Furman on Oct. 3 also will be aired.

The Carolina Panthers claimed rookie tight end Andrew Davie off waivers from the New York Jets yesterday. Davie, 26, spent four seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system before switching to football.

The 6-4, 275-pounder caught 24 passes for 199 yards and six touchdowns in three seasons at Arkansas. He went undrafted in April and signed with the Jets.

Circuit Judge Dennis Murphy of Miami yesterday refused to release surveillance video of a fatal drunk-driving crash involving wide receiver Donte' Stallworth of the Cleveland Browns, saying that making it public would violate the privacy of the family of victim Mario Reyes.

Stallworth is serving 30 days for DUI manslaughter.

The Canadian Football League fined Arland Bruce "an undisclosed sum" yesterday for his tribute to Michael Jackson after a touchdown catch in the Toronto Argos' win in Hamilton. Bruce removed his helmet, shoulder pads and uniform top and laid down in the end zone. He said he was honoring the memory of Jackson by pretending to be buried. He was penalized twice for objectionable conduct.

"I made the mistake of telling him in camp that once he got to the end zone, I didn't care what he did," Coach Bart Andrus said. "But he's straight with it now…."

Basketball

Wake Forest has hired Candice Jackson as an assistant in women's basketball, Coach Mike Petersen announced yesterday. She will specialize in working with the Deacons' guards and help with recruiting.

Jackson spent the past four seasons as an assistant at Richmond and before that spent one season as a graduate assistant at Michigan State, her alma mater.

Hockey

Mark Recchi, the NHL's No. 6 active goals scorer, agreed to a one-year deal to stay with the Boston Bruins, a source told The Associated Press yesterday. The team had no comment.

Recchi, 41, has been part of three Stanley Cup-winning teams -- Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992 and Carolina in 2006. He has 545 goals and 897 assists in 1,490 regular-season games for seven clubs.

The Carolina Hurricanes locked up another of their free agents yesterday, re-signing forward Chad LaRose to a two-year deal. LaRose, 27, will make $1.5 million next season and $1.9 million in 2010-11. He made $875,000 last season -- by far his best in the NHL.

Soccer

Forward Jozy Altidore, backup goalkeeper Brad Guzan and midfielder Ricardo Clark are among seven players who have been added to the U.S. roster for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Also added yesterday were forward Conor Casey, midfielders Benny Feilhaber and Sacha Kljestan and defender Jonathan Bornstein.

All seven were with the U.S. team last month for its runner-up finish at the Confederations Cup in South Africa. CONCACAF, the governing body of North and Central America and the Caribbean, gave the U.S. permission Tuesday to expand its roster from 23 to 30 because it played in both tournaments. The U.S. can dress 18 players for each match.

Wake Forest led three ACC men's teams ranked in the top five of the College Soccer News preseason poll released yesterday. No. 1 St. John's was followed by Creighton, Wake Forest, North Carolina and defending NCAA champion Maryland. Also, Virginia was No. 22.

Miscellaneous

Sprinter Michael Bingham, who finished his track career at Wake Forest with a second-place finish in the 400 meters at last month's NCAA championships, has signed with Ultimate Performance Sport Management, the company founded by sprinter Michael Johnson.

Bingham, 23, ran on Britain's 4x400 team at the Beijing Olympics and won the 400 at this year's NCAA indoor championships. He was an eight-time All-ACC selection at Wake Forest and set eight school records.

An all-star baseball team from Davidson County, consisting of players from Arcadia, Welcome and Midway, used a unlikely run to win the Western North Carolina Cal Ripken Area 3 championship in Elkin.

The Davidson all-stars came through the losers bracket and played seven games in five days (June 25-29), including the last four in a b of 24 hours. They beat a team from Eastern Randolph 9-5 and 12-11 in the final two games to win the title, battling back from an early 7-0 deficit in the second game.
