CAMP LEJEUNE
Troops based in North Carolina are in the middle of a major operation in Afghanistan that the Marines called the largest Marine offensive since the one in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004.
Officials said that one Marine was killed yesterday and several others wounded. The dead Marine hadn't been identified last night.
Nearly 4,000 Marines are involved and are commanded by Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade based at Camp Lejeune.
Marines from Camp Lejeune
and soldiers from the combat avia-
tion brigade of the 82nd Airborne
Division at Fort Bragg were involved.
About 7,000 Marines from Lejeune were deployed as part of the new force of 21,000 troops ordered by the president.
About 2,800 aviation soldiers from the 82nd Airborne also are in Afghanistan.
