Christie Davis, a Winston-Salem resident, lost a trivia quiz on Thursday's episode of Live with Regis & Kelly, but won a nice consolation prize: $500 worth of steak.
Davis, a registered nurse at Forsyth Medical Center, was a competitor on Live's Snapshot Wake Up Call Travel Trivia. Thousands of viewers sent in photos of themselves waking up in the morning. Each day, a contestant is called at home and given a question. If they win, they get a vacation package.
In Davis' picture, which was shown on the air, she looked bleary-eyed and bundled under bedsheets. The picture was taken during a trip that Davis and three friends took to New York in 2006 to see the New Year's Eve ball drop. After the 10-hour drive to New York, she was worn out and wanted to take a nap.
"My friends were, like ,‘Come on, Christie, get up,'" she recalled. "They got the camera and called my name, and once I opened my eyes -- snap! Gotcha!"
The question posed to Davis was what country celebrates its national holiday on July 1. The correct answer is Canada, but Davis answered Australia. If she had answered correctly, she would have won a trip to a resort on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten.
The questions are based on what was discussed on the episode the day before. Davis, who works third shift, watches the show religiously before going to bed. Sometimes, she said, she even takes notes, since she was hoping to get a call from the show.
But on Wednesday when the hosts discussed Canada Day, she had been exhausted and had gone to bed early. "I was not prepared," she said. "The one day I don't watch the show, they call me."
She didn't get to chat with host Regis Philbin -- he was on vacation. So actor Jerry O'Connell was filling in as guest co-host Thursday with Kelly Ripa.
"Christie was bright and cheerful," Brittany N. Forgione, a publicist for the show, said by e-mail. She added that Ripa and O'Connell "had a great time speaking with her."
Davis said she was happy with her consolation prize: a $500 gift certificate for Omaha Steaks.
