GREENSBORO -- RF Micro Devices Inc. said yesterday that it has entered into an agreement with a laboratory of the U.S. Energy Department to develop a semiconductor-based process for high-performance photovoltaic, or solar, cells.
The department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory will combine its knowledge and innovation experience with RF Micro's technical expertise in volume manufacturing at the company's wafer-fabrication plants.
The groups expect that the agreement will result in the production of photovoltaic cells in RF Micro's plants as early as 2012.
