Q. Who has the reputation of being the top teaching golf pros in Forsyth and adjoining counties, and with what clubs are they are associated? -- J.G.

A. The answer depends on whom you ask. Jay Allred, the publisher of Triad Golf Today, suggested recognition by PGA sections and golf-publication awards as one measure; and several area pros have been given credit for their teaching abilities. Among them are Robert Linville, Chris Haarlowe, Rick Murphy and Jimmy McMullen Jr.

In 2008, Golf Digest selected Robert Linville as one of the "Top 10 Instructors in North Carolina." U.S. Kids Golf listed Chris Haarlowe as a "Master Kids Teacher" in 2008 and one of "America's Top 50 Kids Instructors" in 2007. Linville and Haarlowe are associated with Precision Golf School, which has golf specialists at five Triad locations: Pinebrook Country Club, Meadowlands Golf Club, Jamestown Park, Bur-Mill Park and Bryan Park.

Murphy was selected the 2008 "Golf Professional of the Year" by Carolinas PGA, and he has been named a top teacher in North Carolina by Golf Digest. Murphy is the owner and director of instruction of Carolina Golf Academy in Greensboro.

McMullen was named 2006 "Professional of the Year" by the East Central Chapter of the North Florida PGA. McMullen operates Jimmy Mac's Golf Range in Winston-Salem.
