Rim

219-A S. Elm St., Greensboro.

Phone: (336) 230-2055. $$-$$$. ABC. NS.

Small plates with fun twists and a strong Spanish influence, such as Serrano-ham croquettes with basil; fried anchovies with piquillo peppers and shaved garlic; and a salad with Marcona almonds, goat cheese and a honey-truffle oil vinaigrette.

New Town Bistro and Bar

420-U Jonestown Road.

Phone: 659-8062. $$. ABC. S/NS.

New Town loves to change its menu regularly, so it's hard to pinpoint dishes that are always around. I've liked tilapia dredged in crushed cashews and rum butter, spicy-sweet ribs, and flat-iron steak with Yukon Gold mashed potatoes.

La Botana

1547 Hanes Mall Blvd. (Kester Mill Village).

Phone: 768-6588. $$. ABC. S/NS.

The usual faijitas and such, but also more authentic Mexican fare off the regular menu, such as chicken and enchildas in dark red mole; chunky guacamole "regional"; and tacos with chopped steak, bacon and greens. Lots of choices for vegetarians.

Oriental Cafe

612 Hanes Mall Blvd. (Pavilions Shopping Center)

Phone: 774-9098. $$. ABC. Smoking only in bar.

Can it be that a strip-mall restaurant can really do Thai, Chinese and Japanese? So far, yes, and well. Terrific sushi and Mai Tais, those cheesy Polynesian cocktails served in green ceramic glasses shaped like bamboo.

Xia

134 N. Spruce St.

Phone: 723-1400. $$. ABC. NS.

"Asian fusion" is what Xia is going for -- it's not quite that innovative, but still helps close a huge gap in the quality of Asian restaurants in Winston-Salem. Reasonably priced lunch specials, a respectable Asian beer list, and it's gorgeous, too.

Full Moon Oyster Bar and Seafood Kitchen

1473 River Ridge Drive, Clemmons.

Phone: 712-8200. $$$. BW. NS.

Oysters on the half shell, steamed shrimp, Alaskan king crab, snow crab, scallops and clams, by the dozen, peck and pound.

River Birch Lodge

3324 Robinhood Road.

Phone: 768-1111. $$$. ABC. NS.

Mountain-lodge cuisine comes to suburbia. Venison, cedar-planked salmon, trout ... and brie and huckleberry jam baked in phyllo dough. Also serves Sunday brunch.

DownTown Thai Restaurant and Bar

219 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 777-1422. $$. NS. ABC.

Curries, fish cakes, soups and pad thai. Lunch specials.

Celtic Cafe

926 S. Marshall St.

bellbell (out of five) Reviewed Nov. 27, 2008.

No, Guinness is not Celtic cuisine. Here, you'll find Scotch eggs and shepherd's pie, among more American fare. I'm a fan of the house smoked-salmon appetizer.

Athena Greek Tavern

680 S. Stratford Road.

Phone: 794-3069. $$. ABC. NS.

Think Greek food is all moussaka and spanakopita, souvlaki and tzatziki? Try keftedes (meatballs), skordalia (potato dip), pastitsio (macaroni and cheese), galaktoboureko (milky custard pastry) and melitzanosalata (eggplant puree). Opa!
