Greetings Again, Smittyheads!
There's a bundle of community events to report in this edition, including a social networking tool that's starting to take off in the area.
Also, I would like to note the loss of someone who was dear to many in the arts community. Kelly Jo Peterson Womble passed away at the age of 41 on Sunday, January 12, 2009 after a courageous fight against breast cancer. Kelly is remembered as one of the founders of the Arts District, owner of Patina and known by alter ego Ruby Montana. She was one-half of the Renegade Ninja Cowgirls, who spread positive messages by posting creative signs around the community.
Kelly will be truly missed by many, including myself. She was a radiant, inspiring and creative soul who added flair to our community. A rare jewel indeed. My heart goes out to her husband Ralph Womble and her two sons Max and Nicolas Rowland and several stepchildren. I'll really miss the next big thing she always seemed to be cooking up. On that note, I'll move to . . .
. . . the business at hand…
Green Drinks Winston will have its monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at Krankie's Coffee. This diverse group is made up of NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations), academia, Green and renewable energy production companies, real estate professionals, architects, business leaders, environmental groups, artists, alternative medicine practitioners, film productions, everyday people and many many more.
A setting that allows you to just relax, mingle and network among those with common interests, Green Drinks Winston has caught the attention of local media and national writers. Join the group of local people making our community a Greener one . . . one drink at a time. It only takes five easy steps: 1) Bring a friend. 2) Make a name badge. 3) Have a great time. 4) Leave your name badge behind. 5) Come again next month. Krankie's Coffehouse is located at 211 East Third Street. For more information: Call 403-8840. E-mail: greendrinkswinston@gmail.com or visit http://www.greendrinks.org/index.php?region=North%....
Boxing is back on this winter! Rings of Dreams, which has held several boxing matches over the past few years, will hold its next fight on Saturday, January 31st at Millennium Center, located at Fifth and Trade Streets.
Expect some great matches between some colorful personalities. Look for crowd-pleaser Derek "The Black Lion" Edwards (23-0) who will box in a preparation match before his February fight that will be broadcast live on ESPN. Edwards is returning victorious from his KO of Tippy Warren in Jacksonville, Florida. No doubt, "The Black Lion" will have crowds roaring in this exciting contest, too.
Also on the card are Rings of Dreams fighters Roberto White, Fred McClinton, and Gary Lavender. Other boxers include David Saulsberry, Adrian Reddmon, Jason Rorie, Rodney Quick, and Breon Smiley.
Tickets are on sale now. However, the number of seats is limited due to the smaller venue. General admission and ringside reservations are available. General admission is $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Reserve ringside seats are $30 in advance, $35 at the door. The schedule of bouts and the lineup of boxers are subject to change. This event is sanctioned by the North Carolina Boxing Commission.
If you are looking for some entertainment that's out-of-the-ordinary, this is a solid option. Good atmosphere. Diverse crowd. Live, action-packed entertainment. First bout: 8:00 p.m. For more information call 201-0081, send an E-mail to smith@nclawyer.com or visit http://www.ringofdreams.com. Let's get ready to rumble!
Returning for its seventh fabulous year is one of my favorite community fundraisers: Edible Evenings. This is a homegrown campaign for Meals-on-Wheels. In the past six years the program has set a goal of raising $100,000, an amount that would help a number of seniors to be taken off the waiting list for meals delivered to their homes. This is an innovative community event that is inspired by two basics we all enjoy: eating and throwing a party for friends.
Here's the concept: Team up with your friends, neighbors or co-workers and create a party theme— Hawaiian luau, pig pickin', backyard cookout, Italian dinner, turkey fry, crawfish boil or deep-fried Twinkies. Whatever it takes to get folks to step up to the table! Each guest is encouraged to make a donation to Meals-on-Wheels. Currently there are close to 200 seniors on a waiting list who might be at risk of suffering from malnutrition. (Donations are tax-deductible in most circumstances, and 100 percent of the money will go directly to serve the elderly.) If you are interested in participating in the program and would like more information about planning a party, call 748-5932 or visit http://www.EdibleEvenings.org.
Looking for something different to do for the weekend? Ever thought about participating in a Murder Mystery? Henry F. Shaffner House Inn Bed and Breakfast will be hosting a Murder Mystery Game on Friday, February 6 th. This is a full-participation in which you will be assigned a character to play.
The evening provides a unique party experience— one you're not likely to forget. Though total strangers will be talking, laughing and scheming with you, you'll feel like the best of friends in no time.
Not to worry: This is not a play, so there are no lines to memorize. The casual interactive mingle format of the game allows for more intimacy between guests. Rather than sit around a table reading cards and playing a game, you become a part of the mystery.
Unlike scripted games, you have the power to determine your own fate and how you will handle your enemies. The party will not just be about solving the murder, but finding that all the guests have their own agendas.
The event includes an appetizer reception, full dinner buffet and all the props and materials. Cost: $59.95++. The Shaffner House is located at 150 South Marshall Street. Call 336-777-0052. E-Mail info@shaffnerhouse.com or visit http://www.shaffnerhouse.com.
Many of you are connected on a number of social networking sites. One of the biggest draws on these is the "status" feature, which allows you to keep up with your friends in real time. Now you can take it up a notch by using a site that has really taken off in the last year: Twitter. It is a microblog in which you and your friends can track each other by text messaging from your cell phones or smartphones; the messages relating to your whereabouts and what you are up to during the day are called "tweets."
It's pretty entertaining to read not only what people are up to, but also the playful musings among Twitter users. There's a bit of gamesmanship as to who can top whom with creative tweets. But Twitter has its serious side, too. Users often Twitter at major events and deliver breaking news or firsthand accounts of what's happening at a given place or time. I enjoyed reading many tweets from friends who were at the Inauguration of President Obama and getting a real-time sense of what was happening on that historic day. Twitter has about 5 million users that include the news media, government officials, athletes and housewives.
Twitter integrates with Facebook so you can stay connected with friends on that site as well as your Twitter site followers. I joined Twitter last fall and really enjoy using it. I plan to connect with more people via Twitter in the coming weeks at events in the community. You can sign up for this cool social networking tool at http://www.Twitter.com. To follow me go to http://twitter.com/smittyinwinston. Hey! I just might follow you too;-)
If you are a Facebook member or looking to sign up as a newbie, you can click on the Smitty's Notes E-Community of Winston-Salem page on Facebook.com and join the crowd.
