Giants: Quarterback Andre Woodson, a sixth-round draft pick who spent the season on New York's practice squad, was among nine free agents signed yesterday.

The Giants signed six other members of their practice squad: receivers Taye Biddle and Micah Rucker, offensive linemen Mike Fladell and Cliff Louis, tight end Martrez Milner and defensive back Travonti Johnson.

Also signed were running back Dwayne Wright and offensive lineman Orrin Thompson.

Woodson was cut by the Giants at the end of training camp and spent all but one week of the season on the team's practice squad.

Dolphins: Dave DeGuglielmo, the assistant offensive-line coach for the New York Giants, has been hired to coach Miami's offensive linemen, a source speaking on the condition of anonymity told The Associated Press yesterday. He will replace Mike Maser, who was fired on Wednesday.

DeGuglielmo spent the past five years with the Giants and also has coached at South Carolina and Connecticut. He and Coach Tony Sparano of Miami worked together at Boston University in the early 1990s, with Sparano as the offensive coordinator and DeGuglielmo coaching the offensive line.

Saints: New Orleans hired Gregg Williams as its defensive coordinator yesterday, a little more than a week after it fired Gary Gibbs, whose defense allowed 339.5 yards a game this season.

Williams, who spent three seasons as a head coach in Buffalo earlier this decade, was the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars this season but had a down year by his standards. Jacksonville was 17th in yards allowed (331 a game) and 21st in points (22.9). In five of the last nine seasons, Williams' defenses have ranked in the top 10.

Williams also has been an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator with Washington (2004-07), the head coach of the Bills (2001-2003) and the defensive coordinator in Tennessee (1997-2000).

49ers: Scott Linehan is in his second interview with Coach Mike Singletary and General Manager Scot McCloughan, hoping to become San Francisco's offensive coordinator.

Linehan is the first candidate to get a second interview in Singletary's quest to replace Mike Martz, who Singletary fired last month. The 49ers are looking for their seventh offensive coordinator in seven seasons.

Linehan was fired four games into his third season as the St. Louis Rams' head coach last September, but the veteran assistant has been a successful offensive coordinator in Miami and Minnesota.

Singletary also has interviewed receivers coach Clyde Christensen of Indianapolis, offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski of Cleveland and offensive coordinator Rick Dennison of Denver.
