Men's College-Basketball Roundup: Miami comes back to slip past Maryland

Miami 62, Maryland 60: Miami rallied from a 17-point deficit in the second half, and Jack McClinton sank a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to beat Maryland last night in Coral Gables, Fla.
Greivis Vasquez sank two 3-pointers early in the second half to help the Terrapins take their largest lead at 52-35 with 12:30 to go. Miami came back thanks to seven 3-pointers, the last three by McClinton, who scored 18 points.
The Hurricanes (13-3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their sixth game in a row. The Terrapins (12-4, 1-1) lost in their first road game since Dec. 7.
Lance Hurdle stole the ball from Eric Hayes and drove for a layup to give the Hurricanes their first lead, 59-58, with 1:17 left. Vasquez missed two 3-pointers in the final 5 seconds.
Adrian Bowie scored a career-high 23 points for the Terps.

Virginia Tech 62, Richmond 48: Jeff Allen had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Virginia Tech's defense held Richmond to its lowest scoring output of the season en route to a nonconference win last night in Blacksburg, Va.
Tech also got a game-high 12 points from Malcolm Delaney. With the victory, the Hokies moved to 11-5 overall on the season, winning for the sixth time in their past seven games. Tech also avenged last season's 52-49 loss to the Spiders, a loss that played a large role in the Hokies not receiving an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.
Richmond fell to 9-7 overall on the season, losing for just the second time in six games. Kevin Anderson led the Spiders with 11 points.
The Hokies used a 15-0 run midway through the first half to take a 24-6 lead with just under seven minutes remaining and never looked back. Richmond missed its first seven shots from the floor and 19 of their first 21. The Spiders trailed by as many as 22 in the first half and by 20 at halftime.

Davidson 83, Elon 68: Stephen Curry had 39 points and Davidson weathered a second-half rally to beat visiting Elon last night.
Max Paulhus Gosselin added 10 points for the Wildcats (13-3, 6-0 Southern Conference), who extended their conference regular-season winning streak to 36 games.
Curry hit 11 of 18 from the field — including 6 of 10 3-pointers — and 11 of 12 from the free- throw line in posting his 23rd career 30-point game.
Ola Atoyebi scored 27 points for Elon (4-9, 1-4), which lost its fifth consecutive game.

La Salle 68, UNC Charlotte 61: Ruben Guillandeaux scored 14 points and visiting La Salle defeated UNC Charlotte last night in an Atlantic 10 game.
Terrell Williams had 10 points and 11 rebounds for La Salle (9-6, 1-1), which outrebounded UNCC 50-25.
Rodney Green and Yves Mekongo Mbala added 11 points each and La Salle scored 27 second-chance points to UNCC's five
Lamont Mack had 23 points, Charlie Coley added 11 and Phil Jones chipped in 10 points for the 49ers (5-10, 0-2), who lost their fourth straight.

LSU 85, South Carolina 68: Tasmin Mitchell had a career-high 30 points along with 14 rebounds, and LSU won its Southeastern Conference home opener over South Carolina last night in Baton Rouge, La.
LSU (13-3, 1-1) has won 16 straight games at home, including the final three of last season. Garrett Temple and Bo Spencer each scored 10 points for the Tigers, who ended a two-game losing skid.
Devan Downey and Zam Fredrick scored 18 points apiece for South Carolina (12-3, 1-1) which saw its three-game winning streak end. Dominique Archie added 17 points for the Gamecocks, who shot only 36 percent in the first half and could not overcome a 40-22 halftime deficit.

James Madison 79, UNC Wilmington 58: Julius Wells had 19 points and 10 rebounds in James Madison's win over UNC Wilmington last night in Harrisonburg, Va.
After UNC Wilmington (4-14, 1-5 Colonial Athletic Association) took a 6-5 lead with 17:01 left in the first half, the Dukes (12-6, 4-2) dominated the rest of the way. James Madison scored 14 unanswered points as part of a 19-3 run to take a 24-9 lead with 7:48 left until halftime.
James Madison outrebounded the Seahawks 43-26.
Kevon Moore led UNC Wilmington with 13 points and Jerel Stephenson added 12.

N.C. Central 77, Texas-Pan American 71: Jamar Briscoe scored 21 points and N.C. Central won its first game of the season, defeating Texas-Pan American last night in Durham.
The victory was the first for the Eagles (1-18) since defeating Winston Salem State 60-56 on March 15 of last season.
N.C. Central led by as many as 21 points, 69-48, on a Joshua Worthy layup with 5:31 left.
Vincent Davis added 20 points for N.C. Central and Bryan Ayala chipped in 12.
The Broncs (5-11) were led by Emmanuel Jones with 15 points and eight rebounds, and Nick Weiermiller with 14 points and seven assists.

Gardner-Webb 64, Winthrop 49: Aaron Linn had 13 points as Gardner-Webb defeated Winthrop last night in Rock Hill, S.C.
Linn also finished with six rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the Runnin' Bulldogs (7-9, 3-3 Big South Conference). Grayson Flittner contributed 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Eagles (3-12, 2-4) were paced by Mantoris Robinson, who scored 16 points on 8 of 10 shooting. Charles Corbin chipped in with 14 points and five rebounds.

No. 1 Pittsburgh 75, South Florida 62: Tyrell Biggs was Pittsburgh's leading scorer the first time in his career with 16 points in a win over visiting South Florida last night.
Sam Young scored 14 points, DeJuan Blair had 13 points and 18 rebounds, and Levance Fields had 11 points for Pittsburgh (16-0, 4-0 Big East). Blair, the nation's leading offensive rebounder, has 50 rebounds in his last three games — an average of more than 16 per game.
Dominique Jones and Augustus Gilchrist scored 22 points each and Chris Howard had 13 for South Florida (6-10, 1-3).

No. 7 Michigan State 78, Penn State 73: Raymar Morgan scored 17 points, Kalin Lucas went 6-of-8 from the free throw line in the final 2 minutes and Michigan State built a big lead before holding off Penn State last night in State College, Pa.
Goran Suton added 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Spartans (14-2, 4-0 Big Ten), who won their 10th straight.
Down by 17 points with 13:39 left, Penn State (13-5, 2-3) mounted a furious comeback, getting to a point behind at 71-70 with 1:30 left after an off-balance 3 from Talor Battle.
But Lucas, who finished with 15 points, hit four free throws from there.
Jamelle Cornley led the Nittany Lions with a career-high 26 points, while Battle finished with 20.

No. 13 Georgetown 88, No. 8 Syracuse 74: DaJuan Summers scored 21 points and Georgetown had its best 3-point shooing game of the season in a Big East victory over Syracuse last night in Washington.
Austin Freeman scored 19 points and was 4 of 5 on 3-pointers as the Hoyas (12-3, 3-2 Big East) went 12 for 21 from behind the arc.
Eric Devendorf had 20 points and four 3-pointers for the Orange (16-2, 4-1), while Rick Jackson had 17 points and Paul Harris added 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Georgetown pulled away with the long-distance shooting. The Hoyas set a season high for 3-point percentage (57.1) and tied their season high for 3-pointers.

Texas A&M 84, No. 21 Baylor 73:Chinemelu Elonu and Bryan Davis both scored 17 points and Elonu had 16 rebounds as Texas A&M beat Baylor last night in College Station, Texas.
The last time these teams met in College Station, it took five overtimes for Baylor to get a 116-110 victory in the longest game in Big 12 history.
This time the outcome was decided by halftime.
Texas A&M (15-2, 1-1) led by 11 points after the first half and 3-pointers by Derrick Roland and Donald Sloan pushed the lead to 45-29 with about 18 minutes left.
The Bears (13-3, 1-1) made a late run to cut the lead to six points with about 1½ minutes left, but A&M then made 10 free throws to secure the win.

Illinois 66, No. 25 Michigan 51: Illinois center Mike Tisdale scored 24 points and guard Demetri McCamey added 17 in a victory over Michigan last night in Champaign, Ill.
The teams faced each other just 10 days earlier, a 74-64 win for Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Manny Harris had 20 points for the Wolverines (13-4, 3-2 Big Ten).

Illinois (15-2, 3-1) has victories over three Top 25 teams, winning at Purdue and beating Missouri at a neutral site.
