Former President Bill Clinton will have a fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler later this month as the two Democrats continue to build a relationship.
Clinton will speak at N.C. State University on the morning of Jan. 26, then attend a luncheon fundraiser for Shuler in Raleigh.
Shuler, a second-term legislator, represents the state's 11th District in the North Carolina mountains.
A spokesman for Shuler, Andrew Whalen, said that Clinton offered to attend a fundraiser on Shuler's behalf.
"Obviously, we thought it was a great opportunity," Whalen said. He did not have details about the estimated size of the fundraiser or the cost to attend.
This isn't the first time that Clinton has helped Shuler. He reached out to Shuler, a former NFL quarterback, when Democrats recruited him to run for Congress in the 2006 election.
Clinton also attended Shuler's church the weekend before North Carolina's primary this year. Shuler endorsed Clinton's wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, in her run for president because she won the primary in his district.
Shuler comfortably won his first re-election campaign in November, two years after ousting veteran GOP Rep. Charles Taylor. Democrats have mentioned Shuler as a possible challenger to Republican Sen. Richard Burr, but Whalen said he hasn't discussed or decided anything about his political future.
