LEXINGTON -- Deputies arrested a Lexington man Saturday on charges of raping and strangling a woman, Davidson County Sheriff's Officials said.
Casey Alvin Starkweather, 21, of 273 Eden Park Drive was charged with second-degree rape and assault by strangulation. A woman reported an assault to the sheriff's office Friday, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
Starkweather is in the Davidson County Jail with bond set at $100,000.
A Winston-Salem man was charged yesterday with statutory rape and second-degree kidnapping after a police officer accused him of having sex with a 15-year-old girl, court records show.
Victor Hugo Javier, 20, of 215 Fayetteville St. was being held last night in the Forsyth County Jail with his bond set at $150,000, arrest records show.
Javier is scheduled to appear in appear in court Jan. 23.
MOUNT AIRY -- Surry County deputies were investigating a shooting yesterday near Mount Airy.
The shooting occurred shortly after 2 p.m. at 164 Crosswind Court.
Gabriel Delgoado, 26, was shot in his lower body, authorities said. He was taken to Northern Hospital of Surry County, then to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Delgoado's injuries are not considered life-threatening, deputies said.
Deputies spoke to several witnesses who described an altercation between Delgoado and at least two other people.
A new Winston-Salem Police Department plan for assigning patrol officers started yesterday.
The plan, which shrinks the average area that officers patrol, also cuts the number of police work shifts from five to three and switches the department's shifts from rotating to permanent.
Police Chief Scott Cunningham told the Winston-Salem Journal last month that he expects the new plan to improve response times and make it easier for residents to recognize the officers patrolling their neighborhoods.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. today for the Twin City East-West Partnership Weed and Seed Steering Committee Sub Awards. The grant awards are intended to help local organizations work on projects to reduce crime in two designated areas with high crime rates. Proposals for Safe Haven Center prevention programs and offender re-entry programs will be considered.

CAMP LEJEUNE -- Military officials say that a Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune has been killed in Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense reported Monday that Lance Cpl. Alberto Francesconi of Bronx, N.Y., 21, died Jan. 1 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province in Afghanistan.
