Eight basketball teams from Northwest North Carolina, including two defending state champions, have advanced to the NCHSAA's Western Regional tournaments in Greensboro.
The Bishop McGuinness girls will be going after their fourth straight Class 1-A championship, and the East Davidson girls will be going after their second straight title in Class 2-A.
Regional semifinals will start Tuesday and run through Friday, and all regional championship games will be Saturday. Regional winners will advance to the state championship games, scheduled March 14 in Chapel Hill and Raleigh.
The Mount Tabor boys (28-1) are back in the regional for the second straight season after losing in the semifinals last year. They will open regional play against Charlotte Myers Park (24-6) at 8:30 Thursday night at UNC Greensboro's Fleming Gym.
Four Class 1-A teams from area schools also have advanced. In 1-A girls games Tuesday at UNCG, East Surry (25-5) will play Hiwassee Dam at 7 p.m., and McGuinness (26-4) will play Robbinsville at 8:30.
The 1-A boys semifinals will be Friday at UNCG. Bishop McGuinness (28-2) will play Hendersonville (17-9) at 7 p.m., and surprising South Stokes (12-15) will play Cherryville (22-8) at 8:30.
East Davidson will take a 30-0 record into the 2-A girls semifinals and will meet Smoky Mountain (24-3) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at UNCG.
The Ashe County boys are making their first trip to the Western Regional. The Huskies (25-3) will play a semifinal against East Lincoln (26-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.
The McGuinness and East Davidson girls are among four teams that won Western Regional and state championships last year and made it back to this year's regionals. The others are the West Charlotte girls in Class 4-A and the Concord girls in Class 3-A.
The Eastern Regionals will be in Greenville, starting Tuesday, and championship games there also will be Saturday. Girls games will be at Rose High School, and boys games will be at East Carolina's Minges Coliseum.
