In recent letters in the readers' forum, there has been an exchange of views by two people that stands out to me. One suggested that we have 50 million fewer consumers as a result of abortions ("Let it be noted," Feb. 15). The other stated that we have 50 million fewer unwanted children ("Fifty-million fewer," Feb. 21).
it just me who finds either view obscene? What we have is the killing of innocent human beings as a means of birth control. I suggest that either prevention or abstinence are better choices for birth control.
If one physically assaults a pregnant woman and causes her to lose her baby, one is criminally culpable. But that same woman can abort that child for any reason whatsoever and it is legal. That contradiction is incomprehensible to me.
Is life sacred except when women choose not to have a child?

Gaza reconstruction is not our responsibility, but the current administration disagrees and wants to fund this at a cost of $900 million of U.S. taxpayer money.
This is just wrong. The Palestinians have once again behaved self-destructively, with their daily rocketing of Israel. You can poke a resting bear for only so long before it rises and mauls you.
This is what Hamas has done and, as usual, it claims victimhood. Not one American dollar should go into their re-building, especially when they have so many friends with bleeding hearts.

Comparisons have recently been drawn between President Abraham Lincoln and President Barack Obama. To be honest, I can only hope that history doesn't repeat itself.
Lincoln was elected president in 1860, a time when party lines between Democrats and Republicans were strictly defined and radically different. His election was considered unfair by many, as he had been elected to office while not even being on the ballot in nine states. In fact, Lincoln only managed to win two out of 996 counties in the entirety of the South.
Lincoln's win proved that even in the United States, party politics could overshadow a huge percentage of the population's voice. In response to this blatant illegitimating of their political liberty, seven states seceded and so began the Civil War.
Barack Obama was elected president in 2008, a time when party lines between Democrats and Republicans were strictly defined and radically different. In 2009, he passed into legislation a $787 billion economic-stimulus package that was considered unfair by many, as it was passed through the House of Representatives with a complete lack of support from any of the 178 Republicans. In fact, when his bill advanced to the Senate, it only managed to win over three of 41 Republicans (all three were rather moderate Republicans).
Obama's bill proved that even in the United States, party politics could overshadow a huge percentage of the population's voice. So what happens now?

The letter "Unacceptable police action" (Feb. 24) really burns me. All Linzey Gray Bowman needed to do was follow instructions and he would most likely still be alive ("2 Surry deputies cleared in shooting," Feb. 11).
I don't know what started this chase to begin with, but Bowman was a kindly old man. It's terrible that things ended like they did, but until the letter writer finds himself standing in front of an automobile with an obviously deranged man trying to run him down, I would suggest withholding this type of petty criticism of our brave lawmen, who lay their lives on the line every day for even those with so little respect for their efforts.
