Maryland beats Virginia Tech

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Landon Milbourne scored 23 points, Greivis Vasquez had 17 and Maryland never trailed in an 83-73 victory over Virginia Tech yesterday.
It was the third win in four games for the Terrapins, who finally got back to .500 in the ACC. Maryland (16-8, 5-5) is 4-1 at home and 1-4 on the road in the ACC.
The Terrapins went 24-for-26 at the foul line, sinking 22 of 23 in the second half.
Maryland desperately needed the victory to get back to the break-even mark in league play and because the next three teams on the schedule are Clemson, North Carolina and Duke.
A.D. Vassallo led Virginia Tech (16-8, 6-4) with 20 points. Malcolm Delaney had only five points with five minutes left, but finished with 16 to extend his ACC-best run of consecutive games in double figures to 29.
Jeff Allen had eight points, all in the second half, before fouling out with 3:15 left. He was 3 for 9 from the floor, but led the Hokies with nine rebounds.
Maryland went up 41-32 when David Neal hit a 3-pointer with 17:31 left. Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg promptly called a timeout, removed his jacket and gathered his players in a tight huddle.
Allen immediately connected from beyond the arc, but Vasquez answered with a driving layup and added a 3-pointer to put the Terrapins up by 11.
It was 48-37 before the Hokies rattled off eight straight points, but a 3-pointer by Eric Hayes and a three-point play by Milbourne blunted the comeback.
Owner Steve Bisciotti of the Baltimore Ravens sat at his usual midcourt seat on the floor with Ravens coach John Harbaugh, who slipped on a red Maryland T-shirt during a timeout, turned around and pumped his fist toward the student section.
Milbourne scored 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting and Vasquez had 10 points to help Maryland take a 34-29 halftime lead.
Vasquez hit two 3-pointers, and Virginia Tech fell behind 14-8 after missing 10 of its first 13 shots from the floor. Soon after the Hokies closed to 17-15, a driving layup by Vasquez and a 3-pointer by Milbourne provided Maryland with a 29-21 lead.
