Marcus Ginyard and Dexter Strickland didn't play for North Carolina last night because of injuries, but neither was needed in a blowout victory over Presbyterian College at the Smith Center.
North Carolina won 103-64, playing its first game in seven days because of a break for first-semester final exams. The Tar Heels had no trouble against a seriously outmanned opponent, which started four freshmen and a sophomore. North Carolina led 64-28 with 15:57 left after taking a 56-21 halftime lead.
Senior swingman Ginyard and Strickland, a freshman reserve guard, sat on the bench in street clothes as a precaution after being injured in the past six days.
Ginyard is bothered by pain in his left foot. The foot is the same one that kept him out for all but three games last season, but Ginyard said team doctors told him that after three tests the injury isn't related to last season's stress fracture.
Ginyard said he first felt the pain on Monday after practice. He couldn't recall a situation in practice when the foot might have been injured. He is trying to stay off his feet but is not walking with the aid of crutches or wearing a protective boot.
"It feels about the same; maybe a little bit better," Ginyard said. "It's not as good as I want it to. It's a different feeling (than last season). It's uncomfortable to walk around, not to mention run and jump."
Ginyard said he doesn't fear that he will be unable to play in Saturday's game against No. 2 Texas in Arlington, Texas.
"I think I should be fine by then," he said.
Strickland is bothered by a sore left hamstring, which was tweaked Friday in practice. Coach Roy Williams said the hamstring appeared slightly improved yesterday.
The Tar Heels improved to 8-2, scoring 100 points for the first time this season, and the Blue Hose fell to 2-8. Ed Davis led the Tar Heels with 20 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots in 22 minutes. Chase Holmes led the Blue Hose with 29 points.
Strickland's absence forced Williams to use Marc Campbell, a walk-on reserve, as the backup point guard. He played 14 minutes. Given the quick, comfortable lead, Williams spent extensive time working on his team's defense.
Full-court pressure was applied. Williams called for scrambles, in which the Presbyterian player with the ball was double-teamed near the half-court line.
Twice in the first half Presbyterian called timeout to save possessions when the player with the ball was enveloped by two defenders.
UNC used a 33-9 scoring run to build a 51-12 lead with 3:08 left in the half.
"After the Kentucky loss we all had a bad taste in our mouth," Davis said.
"We wanted to play someone new. It was something new, and it helped us."
