PILOT MOUNTAIN -- A Mount Airy man was accused Sunday of starting a fire in a house on Shoals Road after he confronted his estranged wife and threatened her, authorities said.
Donald Dewayne Johnson, 52, of 716 Siloam Road threatened his wife with a knife, pushed her onto a bed and threatened to kill her and then himself, the Surry County Sheriff's Office said. The woman distracted Johnson, grabbed a nearby handgun and forced him out of the bedroom.
She ran out of a kitchen door, the sheriff's office said. Johnson was in the house when deputies arrived.
The deputies tried to negotiate his surrender, but Johnson refused to leave the house and started a fire.
The Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department put out the fire, and deputies then found Johnson injured inside the house. Surry County paramedics treated Johnson and he was taken Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Charges are pending against Johnson, the sheriff's office said.
A Surry County man won $100,000 in the N.C. Education Lottery on Wednesday.

DURHAM -- The state chapter of the NAACP says it will file a federal complaint against an Eastern North Carolina school system, alleging that its practices have hampered black students.
The organization said yesterday that it would file the complaint against Wayne County schools, citing policies that have resulted in lower graduation rates, higher suspension rates and more and stiffer discipline for black students.
RAEFORD -- A federal grand jury has indicted a North Carolina poultry processor for discharging wastewater, including blood and body parts from slaughtered turkeys, directly into the local water system.
House of Raeford Farms and plant manager Gregory Steenblock were charged with 14 counts of violating the federal Clean Water Act.
The indictment accuses the company of bypassing its water-treatment system 14 times at its Raeford plant between 2005 and 2006. The wastewater was sent directly to the Raeford publicly owned treatment works.
A message left at House of Raeford was not returned yesterday.
